For the Beretta 96 roster entry, it doesn't list the type, like "Type F" or "Type G" like most of the other Beretta entries.

Does that mean you can get either?
Specifically looking at what seems to be the more widely available police trade-ins, the "Type G".

thanks

there is no "F" type of the Beretta 96 like there is of the 92, most "G" 96s were LE guns except for the 96 Elite and the "G-SD"

The Gun's rollmark on the slide must match the DOJ list.

The 96 has the same DA/SA action as a 92FS, but says 96 on the slide. I know - cause I FFL'd a 96 into the state, and had the same question.

But 96G, 96D, 96, 96 Vertec, 96 Brig are all different guns on the list.

What's weird is that the 96 model - some have the BOX from Beretta labelled 96FS!! .... So I usually use the terminology 96(FS)... :)

So is Beretta discontinuing the 96 or is that rumer? Is the new model 96A1 with the rail gonna be on the list?

So is a 96 Type G stamped 96G and therefore not purchasable from out of state?

You can get an elite (like i recently did) which has Brigadier slide, and the G-style Decocker only (spring loaded so it's never in "safety" mode, gotta thank the French for this variant).

If you want G, it has to say G and it has to be allowed on roster.

96 / Steel, Alloy Pistol 4.9" .40 S&W 12/31/2010
96 Black Inox / Stainless Steel Pistol 4.92" .40 S&W 5/22/2011
96 Brigadier / Blue Steel Pistol 4.92" .40 S&W 12/31/2010
96 Brigadier Inox / Stainless Steel Pistol 4.92" .40 S&W 12/31/2010
96 Inox / Stainless Steel Pistol 4.92" .40 S&W 12/31/2010
96 Vertec (Black) / Steel, Stainless Steel, Alloy Pistol 4.7" .40 S&W 2/25/2011
96 Vertec Inox / Stainless Steel, Alloy Pistol 4.7 .40 S&W 8/6/2011
96G Elite 1A / Steel Pistol 4.5" .40 S&W 9/13/2011
96G Elite II / Blue Steel, Stainless Steel Pistol 4.7" .40 S&W 12/31/2010
96G-SD / Stainless Steel, Steel, Alloy Pistol 5" .40 S&W 1/31/2011

Bolded = G versions, Underlined = What will be stamped or etched to be considered that particular version.

I'd say, track down an Elite II, or a G-SD if you want to buy within roster from a gun shop. Otherwise, you're better off tracking down an in-state PPT, or a consignment gun (PPT from within a store basically). Elite 1a has vertec grip which i didn't like, so I was delighted when I found an Elite I.

The G-SD gets you a rail on the front of the gun, the Elite II doesn't.

The official line from Beretta themselves, is that It is not available in a cali-legal configuration, and WILL NOT be added to the roster. I was sad to hear this when I was looking into getting mine.

There are stores that will (for a very significant premium) make the 96a1 available (singleshot long barrel etc...).

Thanks.

I was looking to pick up a LEO trade-in as a cheap beater gun, but looks like that won't be happening. :(

Avoid the "D" series and Centurions, unless you want a gun that is DAO. These are the primary LEO trade-ins you will see. (300-400 bucks).

the LE trade-ins are a good deal...currently DA/SA 96 is $430 @ River City Gun Exchange
...every now and then CDNN will have a "G" top end for just over $100
