According to Roberti-Roos-
12276. As used in this chapter, "assault weapon" shall mean the following designated semiautomatic firearms:
(a) All of the following specified rifles:
(1) All AK series including, but not limited to, the models identified as follows:
(A) Made in China AK, AKM, AKS, AK47, AK47S, 56, 56S, 84S, and 86S.
(B) Norinco 56, 56S, 84S, and 86S.
(C) Poly Technologies AKS and AK47.
(D) MAADI AK47 and ARM.

So if it bans all AK series, how are we getting them legally? Is it as simple as changing it from AK to KA(oh that would be cool)

June 2001 Harrott v Kings County decision said (in brief) that 'series' membership and concept of 'copies and duplicates', and whether or not differences were 'minor' or not, were not to be determined by trial courts, cops or even owners...

Only if it's listed by specific make and model in the 'Kasler list' of AR/AK "Series" weapons is it considered banned (Calif Code of Regulation sec 979.11, echoed in the DOJ's Roster of AK and AR15 Series Assault Weapons. That's the gold standard. If not listed, then it's not a banned name. (This is separate from 'by features' issues.)
