Maybe somewhat a little off topic but it does go inline with the SF gun ban.

These punk thieves also target the Apple stores -- however, employees are told to "do nothing" (physically) in the event merchandise is stolen.

You spend hours of your life to earn the cash to buy certain goods, and some punk steals it without the slightest thought of how hard you worked for your property. It makes me sick.

It's a good thing they banned handguns. Otherwise he could have been seriously hurt.

Ban handguns? Let's ban criminals, instead.

"...They go to U.N. Plaza, where it's like a stolen-goods bazaar...."

How apropos!

Hey, I know how they can solve that! They should ban laptops from SF and this crime wave will go away! And then ban the next cause of evil crime. They can do that, until they eventualy ban people from SF and then crime won't be a problem anymore!
(sarcastic note :D )

Damn, that shooting could have been avoided all together if the lousy NRA had not of held up the ban from its original date of 1 January. If they would of left the case alone, that guy with the gun wouldn't of had it at the time he shot and killed that guy, it would have been turned in and probably already been destroyed.

I agree the gun ban is retarded, but I don't think it changes the grab-and-go robbery situation. You'd have a hard time explaining to a jury why you needed to shoot the fleeing robber in the back because he stole your power book.

The murder, on the other hand, is a different story, exept that the victim was from Oakland, so he could legally carry a locked and unloaded gun, even after the ban is in effect. Not that it would be much use in that condition if someone decides to walk up and shoot you for no reason.

Lets just leave the police to take care of it all. As we all know they can stop crime and easily protect the public without ever going above their authority or abusing it.

If someone wants a gun, they'll get it. If we can't stop drugs from coming in from south of the boarder or from the northern boarder. I highly doubt they can stop guns.

Instead it'll just create a massive power vacuum. MS-13 had connections and got surplus AK47s from the El Salvadorian war.

I remember this story a while back, that officers were pulling over a suburban and the guy takes off, someone in the suburban pulls out a full auto ak47. Completely shot up the cop car but missed the officers.

All this does is create an idea of they have the firepower and can do what they want.

Is it coincidence that the MS-13 gang Mara Salvatrucha gained the most influence and power originally in california?

but one of the selling points of, well at least, CCW -- is that no one knows who's "packing" and therefore, at least give the bad guy second thoughts.

of course, like in england where it's even tighter, crimes are up and the numbers just keep going...

i'd love to see in the future and stats for SF if PROP H is upheld. say in a year or 5?

"......Capt. Ehrlich said......

Besides, such operations are costly in resources, he said. "It's a lot of lattes.''

Am I the only one who found this quote disturbing?

A man was stabbed for a freaking computer! Not in some dark and secluded alley way, but in a freaking coffee shop! Now, I don't know about you, but in my opinion a perp who is willing to stab someone in the chest (attempted murder in my book) has lost all sense of human decency and will be more than willing to repeat these acts.

Granted, as countless court cases have found, the police are not liable nor required to provided protection to those whom they serve. Yet, you would think that the police in their earnest pursit of the attacker would explore all avenues to apprehend him. Including a stake out of likely target areas.

I suppose the SFPD feels that an appropriate response to a violent crime is to make glib statements. I wonder how the victim feels. To know that the police do not regard his knife wound and stolen computer as some thing the police department should put resources into.

Perhaps, the assailant will kill someone next time. Who knows, the police might take it seriously and not have to add some stupid punch line.

Trust me on this one , the last worry of the system in SF is the victim !
But remember if you have a bag of Fajitas with your Laptop you might be on the safe side as the SFPD likes them so much , you will have a line of cops around the block waiting to steal those from you . You might lose the Fajitas but the laptop you will still have !! ( sarcastic note )

My favorite lines:

"So far, San Francisco appears to the only major Bay Area city to be hit by the problem. San Jose has been hit by laptop thefts, but it has yet to experience many of the robberies. "We haven't seen it yet,'' said Sgt. Nick Muyo of the San Jose police.

Palo Alto hasn't had any, and Berkeley, another hot area for Internet cafes, had only one such crime about a year ago, investigators said. Oakland police investigators had not heard of any such crimes, either."

Only in San Francisco eh? Gee, I have no idea at all why that could be...

I totallly agree about that CCW "issuing" practices need changing. That guy getting stabbed really pissed me off. It's just a freakin' laptop and some scumbag almost ends your life for a couple of paychecks..

Truthfully, if this had been a case of "snatch and run" where the crook just walks by and then grabs your stuff and runs, I dont think I would condone the use of violence in the sense of a "handgun"... As someone pointed out, what would you do? shoot the kid in the back? I hope not.

But when you have some 'crazy' kid willing to stab you in the chest, then I say we NEED to carry some sort of firearm for protection. I dont think the guy who was stabbed would've been able to do much at that point, but if someone else wouldve had a gun.. i would like to think they wouldve plugged that AHOLE a few times for good measure..

Yeah, a universe of difference between a snatch-and-run and a confront-and-stab.

This does show: SF need more CCW and less Sheriff Hennessey.

Right now there are about a dozen permits in the City. A shame.

Iíve been giving this some thought since I first heard about it. Unfortunately while I believe that widespread CCW would definitely put a crimp in overall victimed crime, in this situation, it probably wouldnít have mattered. The bad guy has already decided upon his course of action. Your response is going to be so far behind the reaction curve that he may be already gone out the door by the time you process whatís happening. No reason to draw at that point; what the heck would you draw on? His rapidly disappearing back? Nope. You just suck it up and be thankful that you didnít end up with a deep penetrating trauma like the vic in the story.

Now, if it goes down to a struggle and it looks like thereís going to be ground fighting, then Iím drawing. At that point I have a reasonable fear for imminent grave physical injury. Especially in light of recent events, like the story above. Itíll play hard in the press (they always do: ďMan Kills Laptop Thief in StarbucksĒ) but Iíll be damned (most likely) if Iím going to just lay down and be assaulted and robbed.

Yeah, why do people NEED laptops? A 300MHz Pentium II desktop with a 14" CRT at home should suffice for most people's needs. Only police and government should need Pentium 4 3+GHz computers and laptops. Regular people who have laptops should be forced to register them, and only be able to carry them in a locked container and straight to work and back home.

and once the government upgrades their computers, they should ONLY be able to sell to people out of state

Nobody needs more than a 10gig hard drive either. Anybody who wants more than that probably just needs it to store porn.
