Does anyone know if it's legal to buy smoke grenades? I've searched the Penal Code and the other code (forgot which one) and can't find anything specific. I've read some sections that might apply, but was looking for someone who has dealt with this. I know other states allow them. This may fall under local ordnances that deal with fireworks (smoke pots, etc). I'm not looking for "I think", or "my aunts brothers cousin knows someone who (fill in the blank) ". I looking for some facts on this issue. Thanks.

It's a felony; destructive device. I don't have the section right now, but you'll get a set of bracelets + three hots and cot for possession.

Smoke granades are not a distructive device, and I can not find a listing for them in the penal code.

BANG illegal, smoke OK :)

As long as there is no explosion, its legal

I looked into this a while ago and one of the things I found was that if an explosive charge is used in any way, then it is a destructive device. Also, there was something about emitting cheimcals (I think it had to do with those pepperspary grenades).

I believe the final "answer" that I got was that pretty much if you pull a pin it's against the law, and if it's launched from a launcher it has to be smaller than the state maximum, and there may be even further restrictions based on location, type of smoke signal, etc.

Also, I have yet to find an online retailer that will ship or sell anything along those lines here, and finding local ones is just as hard. Good luck. Someone I think suggested marine/boating stores as most often our larger bore projectiles are used as signals for boats.

Wish I could be more help, but I can't remember the specifics as it all seemed like more trouble than I needed to just have a novelty 'toy'

I don't know about the legality, but I know you can annoy a lot of people with one.
About 10 years ago, a Marine buddy of mine let loose one at Lost Isle in the Delta; the whole place was enshrouded for about 15 minutes.
Interesting to watch from the roof of the houseboat with a cold one in hand.

Dont know the legality of smoke grenades but i know mcmaster sells a smoke candle that last 3 min and emmits 40,000 sq ft. They are commonly used to test for leaks in duct work.

So than Flash-Bangs would be illegal as well I take it? I don't know the mechanics of them so I'm not sure if there is an actual explosion or not.

I haven't seen smoke grenades in CA since 1986-87ish time frame.

The late, great "Arms & Ammo" store in San Bruno sold canister-like devices (not as big as a soup can, but larger than the smaller V8 juice cans) that had some kind of ringed pull-pin on them - can't remember if they had a grenade-like lever on them or not.

These may've been at H&H in Redwood City at about that time frame too - my memory's unclear.

Since then I haven't seen them anywhere else, incl at gunshows (Reno included).

Why do you need smoke grenades?

well, I would get some, specially if I do end up sailing from hawaii to SF this summer. Sure, the boats going to have flares and the like, but I would also like to have a back pack. It would also be useful for hikers to have.

This may suit you better...

tpliquid1: I agree, I would love to own some flashbangs for the neighbors upstairs, but had to ask why to find an alternative for him if possible.

Why do you need smoke grenades?

Why do you need an AR-15? No honest man needs a magazine greater than 10 rounds. What are you going to do with all that ammo, start a war?

I used to buy mine at the local paintball shop. You may want to check at paintball/airsoft stores.

This Thread below got me thinking:

I'm sure I can get my hands on some, but I don't want them if they're illegal in CA (as most things are).

I'd say that a flashbang would also be classified as a destructive device. In my experience with them, the "bang" part is an explosion.

Military-issue smoke (and CS) grenades will pose a fire hazard. The method of ignition is pyrotechnic and there is usually a jet of flame coming from one end of the grenade while it is producing smoke. They also get hot as f^ck if you hold them, definite burn hazard.

Just something to be aware of.....

"25,000 cubic feet of smoke in 20 seconds"

This basically means it can fill a 2000 sq ft house with a 10 ft ceiling with smoke in 20 sec? This is WAY COOL......
