My sad, sad and lonely one-man cleanup attempt..... :D

I loathe, LOATHE private/paid shooting ranges so I have no problem doing what I can to keep these kinds of places open (i.e.; doing a cleanup/making a dent in a place like this by myself.)

At first I was thinking of just dropping by to do some recon and get some pics to give people an idea as to what kind of mess we're looking at but then when I got there I said screw it might as well do something.

I got there fully expecting to be the only one there and as I mentioned, that turned out to be the case.

Anyways, if I don't upload pics the day I take them I never get around to it.... So....

This is just to show what I didn't get... And of course don't forget about the "targets" that are still out there.

I didn't come prepared to haul a bunch of huge pieces of debris since I don't have a truck. So I only focused on the spent casings/shotgun hulls..... And even that took up all the trunk space I had.

Thanks again.

This kind of mess left behind hurts all of us shooters. I've never understood what the heck people are thinking. Are they in fear of going to jail it empty casings are found in the trunk or pick-up bed?

Great Job!

Thank you for the stewardship!

Speaking as one of the Panoche range cleanup trip organizers, you did a fantastic job here and absolutely deserve every bit of recognition these guys are piling on you. To do this all by yourself, in the hot Davis weather, is just phenomenal. Great job, and thanks for doing all of this.

Next time, get people to sign up and commit, get their cell phone #'s, and call them the day of the event so that no one flakes.. that way you won't have to do all the back breaking work yourself.

Nonetheless - you're a top notch guy.

Awesome pics, you definitely went above and beyond, considering today's heat. Much respect to you. If I hadn't been tied up today with family stuff, I'd have been out there with you.

If someone wants to organize a clean up a few weeks into the future, I'd be down to go. If any calgunners have a truck we can use, that'd be awesome, as some of the stuff out there that needs to be hauled away is pretty sizable. Something to cut down the dried brush on the levee would be awesome too, but that's probably asking too much.

Agreed. This sort of trash left behind is a plague on the shooting sports, and happens everywhere. Can't believe you did this cleanup single-handedly, but wow, the photos sure don't lie.

I'm a little over an hour away but I have a truck available (An Older Ford Ranger)... Try to set a date and let me know as far ahead as possible so I can let you know. And I will not flake out, Not my style.

Also is there a dump or anything like that in the area we can drop the `targets` at?

OP,

Thanks for your work. The after pictures are significantly better than the before pics.

I have a pickup, although much smaller than Purple K's. I would very much like to come help clean up and haul out some garbage. I had been trying to keep up with the cleanup thread, but no specific location was given. I am in Vacaville, so this place is probably less than 30 minutes from my door. I'll be glad to come to the next event as long as I'm not shooting a match that day.

06-28-2010, 6:17 AM
Thanks for all the positive comments everybody it is very much appreciated. Makes the effort worth it, honestly.

As far as scheduling another attempt at a cleanup..... Does everyone think sometime later in the year would be better so we all don't double over from heat exhaustion?

And yes, there is in fact a landfill that is very near the shooting site:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?client=firefox-a&hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=h&msa=0&msid=116911194859005200492.00048a17764b3c5576bdb&z=19

And location.... What's the general feeling on publicly posting directions to an area like this? On the day of a cleanup, should we just arrange a "caravan staging point" and then drive the rest of the way in convoy-style?

Also what day of the week works best for most people's schedules? Saturday's or Sunday's?

NCHogin

+1 for Actual volunteers showing up On Day of cleanup --> Caravan staging point.

PS. Kinda funny, my truck has a bumper sticker that says "Yes, Its my truck. No, I won't help you move"...mostly to deter family members from asking.
BUT for this, I will allow use of my truck ;)

Yeah I was kind of thinking along the lines of "price of admission." :43: (Hence the need for a pre-meet up point.)

Dirk Tungsten
06-28-2010, 7:28 AM
Another vote here for the "Meet and then Caravan" option. There are a few landmarks close by that would make for good staging points. Also, I'd vote for a cooler time of year also, but if there are going to be any relatively cool weekends coming up (sub 95 degree high temps) that might work too.

Ditto for the next clean up. I'd be happy to help. Just let me know where to meet to caravan and I'll be there.

Excellent job, OP, you did A LOT. Thanks for the hard work, it was hotter than hell in Sac, musta been around 100 there too

I would rather do it Caravan style....

scoob_i_e
06-29-2010, 7:43 AM
Okay yeah sounds like we'll make a try for the caravan option.

That way we can avoid putting up the directions publicly.... It's kind of like; you would like to know where the location is? Then.... Swing by to come help us and you'll find out on the very day we go for a cleanup. Like I said earlier in the thread; I look at is as a sort of cost-of-admission. :)

So... Suggestions on a date anyone?

I'm totally down for a spot like this as supposed to the Yolo sportsman's. My only concern is with who owns this spot of land and who say's it is OK for everyone to shoot there. If the sheriffs ever did happen to stop bye, How can we prove it is legal for us to shoot there?

Kudos to you man! +1000!!!

I've never understood how people can trash a place or be so careless and shoot up metal signs or gates. You did a big service to the county and people.

We need a Calguns Cleanup sign that says a member volunteered and cleaned up other peoples mess. Kind of like the adopt-a-highway signs.

As a NorCal resident, I thank you!

Mark me down for a future clean up date, weekends preferred.

I hate range slobs :21:

I'd love to have some public land to shoot on.
How many yards can you shoot out there?
I'll be down to help, I'm in solano county and would be happy to help.
I can also bring some swinging steel targets to have fun with, without leaving a friggin mess.
PM me a week or so in advance so I can plan for it. Weekends are best for me.

Who owns this land and who has permission to shoot there?

I've been trying to find this out since the first thread was started. I'm very close to this spot and would love to have a place like this to shoot, but without some kind of confirmation that its 100% legal to shoot there (especially so close to davis) it is not worth me risking my toys....or worse.

Too hot! The August date sounds much preferable. PM me if someone volunteers to spearhead the next one and I will be there, I'm only about 30 minutes away.

If this is a legit shooting spot it'd be a whole lot shorter drive than up in the mountains where I have been shooting in the past.

Davidoff

I can do August 14th, no need to rush it. I was just throwing a date out there.

As far as shooting, unless I have explicit permission from the land owner I will not be partaking. I want to help cleanup because I hate how the mess makes all shooters look irresponsible, even though some of us do actually give a damn. I'll be probably be shooting a match the next day anyway.

Please keep me in the loop for any future cleanup date.

scoob_i_e

I think I'll adjust the date, bump it another month (or two) out. Actually I think I'll make the new cleanup thread with a poll option. Options are better (if kept within reason) so.....

Also yeah I too am not 100% convinced as to whether it is legal to shoot at that spot. So as suggested, until some absolute verification can be had, we should stick to just clean-only and not clean-shoot-clean.

And yes as commented on.... The types of things that some people honestly believe make for appropriate targets (furniture, TV's, glass bottles) is beyond me. Let alone signs and other public property....... Purpose-designed steel and paper is the way to go.

This question has been asked by many of us since this whole thing started. The general census (via P.M) is "NO", it has not yet been verified. I'd love to participate, I'd love to shoot there, but until I know for a fact beyond any doubt my guns won't be taken away and I won't go to jail for doing so...I can't.

wow nice work. i was under the impression this range was closed? the last time i was there, i saw a wooden "NO TRESPASSING: PRIVATE PROPERTY" sign between the water and road. i had always thought that the land there was BLM owned, and the road was the private property (hence the gate). but the sign scared me away anyhow. so is shooting legal there or what?

A Lot of people have asked this question. If you read the whole thread you will see nobody is responding to it. That makes me think that no one knows for sure, but people plink there anyways. Is that safe enough for you and you're guns?

I'm up for helping to clean this up as well. Have a Tundra can fit a load of stuff in there. And I too am surprised this even exists so close to home?

I like to support Yolo as well but this would be nice as an alternative but I wouldn't want my weapons confiscated if it's not. In any case PM me for clean up duty when it's decided.

Need I say more?

Ok, I need. There are different sizes. The shotshell sized one won't pick up brass. The brass sized one won't pick up shotshells.

They work well. You just need one and a bucket or trashbags. Makes cleaning up after yourself very easy. You roll it around lazily, then pull the wire apart over a receptacle. Done. Yes, it will pick up rocks too.
