I finally complete my AR but there is a big problem (i think) when the gun is locked together, upper and lower. and i first pull the charging handle back on an empty mag, it stays locked back. but when i go and hit the bolt release it slides forward but looks like this, not the way it should. http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h65/blkA4alb/?action=view&current=04-06-06_1907.jpg
sorry for the crappy picture my real camera isn't with me. the first time this happened everything was locked up, i couldnt pull the trigger, move the safety, nothing. i had to take the buttstock off to get it apart. thanks for the help

I have no idea, and it's hard to tell from that picture.

Is it not locking all the way forward? I thought I read on arfcom that someone was having a problem where the bolt was dragging on an empty mag and would be slowed down to the point where it wouldn't close all the way. Does pushing on the forward assist help at all? (don't push too hard). If it's not locked into battery, I would assume the trigger/hammer couldn't be released. Not sure how safe it is for you or the rifle, but have you tried taking out both pins and pulling it off the lower? You might want to wait a bit before trying that though, so someone can give a yay or nay to that (most likely nay, but it is an option).

Could be several things, let's start with the basics.

Is your bolt carrier well lubricated? (Couple of weeks ago I saw someone at the range and his bolt was dry). Yours looks dry.

What kind of stock are you running? You may have the wrong tube or wrong spring, i. e. collapsible stock spring in a regular stock.

I missed it earlier, but yeah next time just pull both pins and you can get the upper off.

Now that you have the upper off, does the carrier bolt move freely without the lower?

yes i can remove the carrier and charging handle when it is off the lower and they move like they should, i figured out it wont seperate when its not locked forward because it sticks back into the butt stock thread area, locking it in. i lubed it up and im using an ace socom m4 stock.

blkA4alb, there are a number of things that could be happening. Your gas tube might be bent, your bolt/bolt carrier is out of spec, and the buffer tube/spring might be the wrong size or poor lubrication as mentioned before. Sometimes it's hard to see the problem without switching out parts til you find the culprit. If you are in the So.Cal area and still can't solve the problem let me know. I've have extensive experience as a military armorer, so if you can travel out my way, I'd be happy to help free of charge.

Is the gas tube hitting the bolt carrier key?

I wouldn't think it's the gas tube...cause it functions without the lower attached.
Try wiggling the bolt catch while you attach the upper to the lower. Sometimes it will bind if it's dry or gets a wedgy because it's not really meant for you to attach the upper and lower with a mag in the well.

i left the pistol grip off and attached the upper without a mag in it and my problem is there. what happens is the rotating bolt at the front stays locked forward preventing it from locking forward, but all the parts move freely when the carrier is not installed in the upper/lower. arggggg

something to do with the carrier key, can't put my finger on it right now....

Try lubing the bolt to carrier surface better. While it rotates when out of the upper, it may not have enough wiggle room when inside the upper. All your parts are new and some of the tolerances may be on the tight side.

Let me guess, "Model 1 Sales?" ;)

I cock the hammer before attaching the upper to the lower to take the pressure off the bolt catch. It still may be contacting the bolt carrier with the mag uninstalled.

Try the action while depressing the bolt release lever.

SO I couldn't tell from the thread but the Bolt/Carrier group move and cycle freely with out the lower rcvr attached????

If so.....B/C could be draggin on a part that is out of spec on the lower.....

Hammer
Bolt catch
Magazine
Buffer detent
rcvr ext tube
