Just want to take the wife out with the AR shooting, so I called SB BLM and this (http://www.specialdistricts.org/2/docs/FishandGameShootingAreas.pdf) is where the sent me to download a map of locations to shoot. Either I am blind or something, I can not make out this map for the life of me. Anyone have a better map or number to call?

I've seen this one before and studied it carefully.
It is perhaps one of the most useless maps I have ever seen.

I like the first one. It shows a lot more and the second one doesnt appear to jive with the first?
red area- shotgun with bird shot only, bow and arrow
yellow- all firearms while hunting (licensed) day time hours only
dark yellow - all firearms while hunter or target shooting daytime hours only
light blue, shotguns only during bird season, no other time
dark blue- go for it day and night
white-never ever

so you need to find a dark yellow or dark blue area, or be hunting within F&G rules.

That's right, El-Sucko Map #1 does not match with other current info, closures or any other maps.
I'm guessing, from the poor quality of the map scan, that El-Sucko is maybe 20 years old.
I would NOT risk a firearms use violation based on this map.

If you live near ridgecrest, I can pinpoint on google maps exactly where to go for a fun day of shooting on BLM land.

Heres what it looks like. Absolute shooting bliss! Just be aware of the 1 or 2 runners that like to run along the rail tracks.:D

Please do point this out. Is this where they have the MDR race? I am looking to do some long range shooting. Thanks-If you live near ridgecrest, I can pinpoint on google maps exactly where to go for a fun day of shooting on BLM land.

brings up a good point, whos at fault if I ask for a map and they give me an outdated one? The fcat they gave me directions and said it was ok...then I committed no crime.

I can use el-sucko #1 to grid into my gps, therefore I would know i am within el-suckos defined legal places.

just goes to show you can't trust .gov to get something right.

The harder the map to read, the more likley you wont go shoot there. Thats probably why CA BLM wont update there site since its so hard to navigate and get info off of, so people just give up and not shoot and they win haha

Well the OP lives in OC like myself.
Seems like every BLM spot is hours away and I still can't tell forsure if they're legit areas.

Confusing :/

The new map is on the Board of Supervisors agenda for approval. It was scheduled for a vote on June 15th, but has been moved to July for the vote. I'll keep people notified of the progress on this thread:

The "north of Hwy 40 (going up the 15) & Hwy 58 (going up the 395)" is a good rule of thumb that will keep you out of trouble. The area where Hodge Rd (west of 15) is at is legal rifle/pistol/shotgun & night shooting. But just across the 15 (east side) is not.
Basically, if you stay north or 40 & 58, all areas are open to rifle/pistol/shotgun & night shooting. The exceptions are military bases, incorporated cities, Mojave Natl Preserve (hunting only), private property, Camp Cady, and Death Valley Natl. Park.
