I'm close to buying an xd subcompact. I have a question about configuration.

What's all involved in changing the caliber? Is it only the barrel or the whole upper... slide barrel springs etc.

I was thinking of buying it in 45 and then getting a 9 barrel later.

I've seen shops online the 40's as 3" also but according to the roster its 3.01 so I suppose that's probably not interchangeable with the first 10 models in the list?

Thanks, and open to suggestions on which to get first. I'll probably buy locally if not PPT on the private sale forums.

AFAIK...
Currently, there are no caliber conversions for the XD45.

Also...
The barrels/slides/frames/magazines of the XD9/40/357 are not compatible with the XD45.

the best thing to do is get a SIG P229. buy one in .40 and you can just get barrels to switch to 9mm, and 357sig. other then that you can also get a .22lr conversion for it. those run about $300 for the kit.

From 40 down to 9mm, all you need is a barrel change. But the spring should help operation for correct loads. Tighter spring equal less felt recoil but hotter loads light spring equal more felt recoil but will feed lighter loads.

I don't have experience with the XD's, but I have converted calibers from .40 to 9mm for my Glock. For the Glock 27 (.40) you can just switch barrels with a .357Sig and still use the .40 magazines. To convert from .40 to 9mm, I got a .40 to 9mm conversion barrel (which is a little thicker diameter barrel than a Glock 26 9mm barrel, same diameter as the stock .40 barrel) and some Glock 26 9mm magazines. That setup has worked flawless so far. Some will recommend changing the ejector to a 9mm ejector for flawless function if there are feeding and extraction problems with the conversion.

I am not aware of conversions from .45 to 9mm though because usually the .45 platform is thicker than the .357Sig/.40/9mm platform and there are not conversions between the platform sizes.
