I have a Bushmaster Ar-15 complete rifle with a 16" barrel that I registered with the CA-DOJ as AW in 2001 before it was banned. For those who are knowledgable fellow member, I have two legal question to ask. Will it be legal to purchased a complete 14.5 upper assembly with permanently pinned attached FH, COMPENSATOR, OR MUZZLE BREAK and use it with my lower? Can I use all my pre-ban high cap mags and not be in trouble for not having a bullet button? Your feedback and some info will be much appreciated.

You wont get in legal trouble, but you're likely to get hassled by know-it-all kids at the range ;)

If it's a regged AW, you can have any number of these evil features:

1.) Folding or collapsing stock
2.) Thumbhole stock
3.) Pistol grip
4.) Flash hider
5.) Forward vertical grip
6.) Grenade or flare launcher

Just make sure that the grenade launcher is lawfully owned! :)

The upper you want doesn't have to have a compensator or muzzle brake. It can have a flash hider.

You've got a lawfully registered AW, you can't make it more assaulty.

I have a copy taped to the inside of my case. Im also thinking of having my friend do me up a tee shirt saying "Yes its registered, so don't ask" Old age has its perks.

If you get a stock like the SOPMOD or ACS the storage tubes are a perfect place to keep a copy of your paperwork.

I thought you still need a SBR tax stamp for that?

You do. I was just saying it would make an AW more "assaulty."

Well not really. Since the AW laws are only CA laws, and shortening the barrel is all Federal.

So since it's a RAW, could you get a tax stamp from the ATF to modify the barrel shorter?

That would be pretty cool.

no, you won't be able to get a tax stamp from ATF to turn it into an SBR. CA law also regulates SBRs and you have to get a CADOJ dangerous weapons permt before ATF will approve the Form 1 or Form 4.

I would like one too. Always with the nosy-noses looking you up and down, coming and looking through your table... I must look young for my age, or whatever.

To the OP: as mentioned a RAW is good to go with that. Slap a FH on that and make 16". Perhaps consider getting a 16" with a mid length gas system.

i think what you are confusing youself with is the federal pre/post ban modifications that were implemented on our nation.. it expired in 04, so, no more restrictions for flash hiders and collapsables and what not..
