I have been reading on some forms about the possibility of NATO changing its round to the 6.8 spc or 6.5 grendel. My question is if I had an AR-15 that fired a 5.56 round could I just buy a new upper chambered in 6.8 or 6.5 and bolt it on to the lower? I dont have an AR yet, just curious.

Yes, either. Just switch out uppers and you're good to go.

Highly unlikely that either will make it as a military round, mostly it is wishful thinking.

Wishful thinking?

Or Jordanian thinking (http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2010/05/13/lwrc-rifles-to-be-license-produced-in-jordan/)?

I'm kind of hoping one or the other will get picked up by NATO. That is if caseless ammunition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LSAT_caseless_ammunition) doesn't take off any time soon.

Nothing will happen while the wars are going on. I expect no changes sooner than 10 or 15 years down the road.

Absolutely correct.

And yes you can just put the 6.5 or 6.8 upper on a regular AR lower with no problems.

Well Jordanians might start using them and making them but I highly doubt they will become a NATO round anytime soon!
