This is the situation, I am in San Diego and can get out a lot around here but it is slim pickins. I got my jeep running real good so I can take advantage of using 4wd to get further away from the crowds. Trying to decide if I should just get another D16 general deer tag and hunt this area really hard and often, or should I try another part of the State where the deer populations are a little more dense. Wouldn't mind a 1 day walk in back pack if the opportunity for success was there. I am just unfamiliar with the other zones and don't want to waste expensive gas just to find out I picked a zone as thin as D16.

only 1 way to get familiar with the other zones... get a tag and burn some boot leather.

I'm not familiar with any of those southern zones, so I can't help you there.

Look at the D8 and D7 zones.... they are HUGE and go from bakersfield to darn near yosemite. D8 never maxes out either.

Haha, archery only and you free to go just about anywhere in the state! I love it cuz if a isn't good, b, if not d and I dont have to worry bout sticking to one zone.

Very large, lots of Nat'l Forest/BLM land to hunt, BUT a very low percentage of tags are filled (4-5%). Beautiful country to walk around in, though!!
