The fn49 is the Argentinian Naval issue with the 3 detachable magazines for $850

The polytech M14 is $950, no upgrades.
Condition wise the FN49 is surplus but very good, metal 99% wood 90%
Very minty bore and gas system

The polytech is basically new

I'm leaning towards the FN49.
My reasoning

More collectible, only 7K ever made, less imported
3 magazines, they go for 100 bucks each on gunbroker

The obvious choice is the FN if you're into collecting.

Otoh, the Polytech is better than anything currently offered by the company that stole the Springfield Arsenal name;). For a shooter, I'd grab the M1A, consider having the bolt replaced/headspaced with the USGI parts if you want. I suspect the 'soft bolt' issue is way overblown thanks to the www.

Both are priced right, particularly the M14.

Sorry, it's flip-a-coin time.

Think your gonna have to sink even more money on the Polytech bringing it up to spec. FN49 FTW!

Get the FN49: $850 + (3) mags (I assume 20 rounders / re-build kits) in 90%+ condition, that's not a steal but highway robbery!

You can always get a Polytech M14S at a later date.

I own(ed) both types. The Polytech is fine the way it sits. The Argie is a collector piece not a daily shooter. Pretty much all the repair parts have dried up so if something breaks you may be out of luck. I had to get my 10 mags rebuilt; the hack job turning from 20s to 10s was pretty darn crude.

Id buy that FN right now!
Polytech, nice for what it sold for back in the day, but not something that will increase in value like a real used military firearm.
