View Full Version : Red Dot on my chest while checking targets.

I shoot at an abandoned gravel pit about Ĺ mile from my place. I hear people shooting over there 2 - 4 times a week, so it gets used but most of the time no one is around. Even at that it gets trashed. I haul about 10 pickup loads of trash out of there every year. I just want to keep the place open.

The pit has high walls with trees and brush at the top of the walls. Yesterday I was working up some loads, as I was changing targets I saw a red dot on my chest for just a second, NOT COOL. No one else was shooting and the dot came from the brush above the high walls. I checked the road coming into the pit, but whoever it was had to have been on foot?

Anyway it has me a little rattled, I plan to put out some trail cameras to see whoís coming and going. Iíve been thinking about doing this to see whoís trashing the place, so now I have another reason.

I canít think of anything else to do.

Yikes! Trail-cams are a great idea and they are relatively inexpensive these days... sorry to hear ya gotta put up with the mess (and the lasers!) where you like to relax and shoot. :(

The world is full of idiots - so be careful out there...

what's the chance it was a piece of trash reflecting on your shirt? Like a CD or prism of some sort?

(just think it was and feel better....)

put up the cams, I would put a really obvious cheap cam up somewhere with a note on it asking people not to trash the place. And a really well hidden one to watch the guy shoot your other cam....

This happen to me several years ago. It was at night on a dimmly lit street. The dot was about the size of a golf ball and wandered around me like the person was attempting to center on me but couldnt. I saw the guy who was about 300 yards away. I couldnt see how or what he was targetting me with. He was inside a car and drove off as he realized lasers work both ways. I called the police. They told me they would contact me for a report if they needed to. They never called me back.

You should get a fake camera and fill it with tannerite by the no littering sign and have the trail camera hidden so when they shoot the tannerite camera it catches them in the act. You might even hear them if you live close enough.

edit: I wouldn't recommend this as it may hurt someone unintentionally but it would still be funny.

Timber company land.

My number one theory is someone else came to shoot, but didnít want to share the spot, and was checking me out from the brush.

My number two theory is a local landowner was checking things out, but this is very remote with only a few land owners that could even hear the shooting. All are over Ĺ mile away.

Donít ask about my number three theory.

depending on how close they were and how bright the day was...a red dot doesnt go very far during the day...I say the most would be 20 yards..if that. So if a person did laser your chest, they would of been really close to you. Next time, bring your rifle with you while you change targets. ;) tha'll keep the red dot off.

Very remote, maybe a dozen houses within a mile. I did pull in a couple weeks ago to find about dozen teenagers with no car. They would have had to walk at least a mile to get there (I know most of the locals). They were just throwing rocks, being kids. Boys and girls were paired off, probably getting away from the adults. I remember those days. :)

Hopefully it wasn't some drug runners who are planting in the timber land. I know some folks who own timber land up north and they say that has happened more than once.

I understand you were a bit upset, but do realize that almost all lasers have nothing to do with firearms, just laser pens - pretty much every kid has one. If you assume this was a gun aimed at you, you should also assume the same thing next time a flashlight is aimed at you, since it could be a weapon light.

Laser pens are so common it literally wouldn't even occur to me that it could be a gun aimed at me if this was me. I'm really surprised you've jumped to this conclusion without even seeing a gun.

Even if it was just a laser pointer, laser pointers can damage your vision if you catch one in the eye. Seriously not cool. If this is something you plan on doing a lot, I would pick up some body armor. Even if it is some yahoo screwing around, that is how accidents happen.

Kinda like .... you dont really need to watch your space in traffic...everyone drives a car and everyone obays the traffic laws...no one will merge into your lane unless they give a 3 second signal, look back to see if its clear then slowly merge into your lane.

How could anyone jump to the conclusion that it was a gun???

It was probably some Microsoft executive who got lost in the woods while on his way to give a speech where he was going to use a red dot pointer. :D

Maybe wear a vest? But could be expansive. Also it just invite headshots.
Try shooting with a buddy, or better yet in a group, on calgun its hard not to find people to go with you ;)

P.s. maybe other people checking you out through their scope and trip the laser accidently. Still stupid.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of filling the trail cam with tannerite... Would hafta' put it up real high so their only option would be to shoot it; as opposed to stealing it...

regarding trail cams; they are VERY handy:

My house backs up to a levee and I put up a trail cam in my backyard covering the access road right outside my gates. OMG- lots of people here joke about Zombies as if there arent any! It was like night of the freakin' living dead- I had no idea that the levee road/jogging trail becomes Human Detritus Highway after midnight!

Alas; I need a better way to secure it because I forgot and left it out at daytime and it got swiped. Ima buy a new one at Walmart (less than 80 bucks I think) hide/secure it better and post some zombie pics.

ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY
Mike Honda, Chair

AB 293 (Wesson) - As Amended: April 5, 1999

SUMMARY : Makes it a misdemeanor to sell a laser pointer to a
minor, aim a laser pointer at specified uniformed persons (e.g.,
a uniformed police officer), or direct the beam into another
person's eyes, an animal's eyes, or into a moving vehicle.
Specifically, this bill :

1)Prohibits selling a laser pointer to a person under age 18,
unless that minor is accompanied by a parent, guardian, or
other person 18 years of age or older.

2)Prohibits a person under 18 years of age from possessing a

So its more likely some guy hides in the bushes across from you, hits you with a laser gun sight, then takes off without ever showing himself or ever firing his weapon in the area that day? Makes sense

Much more likely than the fact that nearly everyone under 20 years old has a $30 laser pen and thinks its funny to aim at people. But ok, go buy your ballistic vest, and don't forget the rifle plates cause apparently ranchers are all sterile so as to have no kids in the area what-so-ever.

And laser pens went out of style for tech company execs back in th 90's, its all about the webex presentations today. :p

Seriously, is there no one under 30 in this forum who knows what kids are doing today? News Flash: If you have a teenage boy, he is using his computer to surf porn on the internet even if you have blocking software, he is illegally downloading free games and music on the internet even if you told him not to using thepiratebay.com, and he and his friends hide in the trees and shoot cars and people with laser pens and then run cause they think its funny even though its just stupid (which they wont realize for another decade), and it would have been twice as funny to them if they saw you coming after them. That is what teenage boys do all the time in 2010

Here's the actual PC section:

417.25. (a) Every person who, except in self-defense, aims or
points a laser scope, as defined in subdivision (b), or a laser
pointer, as defined in subdivision (c), at another person in a
threatening manner with the specific intent to cause a reasonable
person fear of bodily harm is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by
imprisonment in a county jail for up to 30 days. For purposes of this
section, the laser scope need not be attached to a firearm.
(b) As used in this section, "laser scope" means a portable
battery-powered device capable of being attached to a firearm and
capable of projecting a laser light on objects at a distance.
(c) As used in this section, "laser pointer" means any hand held
laser beam device or demonstration laser product that emits a single
point of light amplified by the stimulated emission of radiation that is visible to the human eye.

And if you're pointing them at a cop:

417.26. (a) Any person who aims or points a laser scope as defined
in subdivision (b) of Section 417.25, or a laser pointer, as defined
in subdivision (c) of that section, at a peace officer with the
specific intent to cause the officer apprehension or fear of bodily
harm and who knows or reasonably should know that the person at whom
he or she is aiming or pointing is a peace officer, is guilty of a
misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for a term
not exceeding six months.
(b) Any person who commits a second or subsequent violation of
subdivision (a) shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail

.
for not more than one year.

I had a red dot on my chest once as I was walking up to my cousins house around 9pm years ago. I freaked out and hit the deck because at the time laser pointer were just hitting the public but lasers on guns had been around for years so I had no idea my punk little cousin (my cousins little sister) lit me up through the window.

I had just got out of the military.

I didnt think it was funny at all.

How far away was any area where a human could have hid? In daylight small red dots are hard to see from any distance unless you were wearing a bright white shirt. If the dot is spread out it will be even less visible. So unless the laser is part of some other sighting system not just a laser pen it is useless to the pointer. My quess is that a laser pointer or sight was dropped or lost or disposed of nearby while turned on and is not readily visible. Go out at dusk and kick up a little dust maybe you can see it if the battery hasn't run down.
A question I would have is why you didn't see the lasers location due to the dust and particulate matter in the air in a gravel pit with someone shooting there. :)

It came from thick brush about 30 yards away, it was a bright day, but I was in the shadow of the cliff, wearing a light tan shirt. I immediately looked the direction it came from. When I didn’t see anything I moved back and forth trying to see if it was a reflection, but it was gone.
They did bust 87,000 plants on the ridge to the north, and 44,000 on the ranch to the south, along with several smaller busts last year. The kids I know from the area all come over to reload shells. They are all hardcore hunters and know where the pigs hide. While pig hunting this year these kids have pulled up a couple of miles of black PVC leading to pot plants. They stomped the plants and took all supplies THREE times at the same place. They thought for sure the growers would abandon the place, but they just keep replacing everything???

Whether it was a kid with a pen, or someone with a gun I don’t think they thought it through and didn’t think I would see the dot and look their direction.

VaderSpade
06-19-2010, 10:13 AM
I should add that the road coming into the gravel pit is behind the brush where the red dot came from.
Anyone coming in to shoot or checking out who was shooting would have just needed to stop on the road and walk about 20 yards through a clear cut to the layer of brush surrounding the pit.
This is where I plan to put one of the cameras. I'll put another that will catch all vehicles and their plates as they come and go.

I feel your anguish.

1997 downtown smalltown america on a friday night. Cruising main street with a friend. Out of nowhere a red dot appears in the vehicle. First holds on the drivers chest then mine. He hit the gas, and we bounced in a hurry.

Called the local P.D. and gave them the rundown. They headed to the place we described the laser as coming from. Found a 13 yo kid with his dads AR. dad was down at the local bar putting a heater on. Left the kid in the hotel alone.

The officer did inform us that the weapon was uloaded at the time they found it.

No matter how you slice it, laser pointer, or laser scope. Not cool, or funny in any way

I live in the middle of San Francisco and was putting out the trash awhile back. It was after dark, the street lights were on. As I turned to head inside I noticed a red laser dot on my chest. It was coming from the roof of a building up the street from where I was... It creeped me out a bit but I figured it was someone just messing around with a laser pointer. I didn't realize that it is actually a crime, probably should have reported it. Like I said it was dark. No way to tell if it was just a harmless pointer laser or one attached to a gun.

ETA not to hijack the thread. I think the trail camera is a good idea, in OPs situation I would have assumed a gun and been rightfully pissed off.

Wow, I'd be concerned too...

Maybe a stupid question, but was the dot stable, or shaking around (as if you had time to make that eval, LOL)? Having played with pointers and guns with lasers, it's more difficult to hold a pointer steady when not mounted on a weapon...

I guess even in the middle of nowhere you’re not safe.

My third theory (the one I said don’t ask about) was that law enforcement was staking out the area and came to check out the shooting.
