Is it possible to get an A zone tag as your first tag and a B zone tag for your second tag? I expect to hunt primarily in the A zone, but I have friend who has a ranch in the B zone that has invited me to hunt.

Why not? You are allowed two tags per season. Who says they need to be in the same zone?

Yeah they dont have to be in the same zone. If you are trying to draw a premium zone though, that is only with your 1st tag application

O.k., thanks. My friend said he thought that the 2nd tag had to be in the same zone as the first, but I couldn't find anything that said that.

Yes , two tags with differant zones is allowed

You can also exchange your A tag for a B tag ...check DFG for rules.

Hunt A zone , no luck...exchange for the later B zone.

This might not be the case This year...but check into it

There's a time limit. once the season has started you can not exchange the tag. It would be a nightmare for DFG to exchange tags if you could do it during the season.

As I recall tags can be exchanged prior to opening day of the archery season. Once the season starts for the zone in which your tag is held there is no way to exchange it. It would cost the DFG tons of money if they did that.

However you're correct that your two tags not needing to be in the same zone.
