Here's an idea: anything other than Vulcan. :D

agreed: anything but Vulcan or Fab10

I think things may be picking up steam in Sacramento if another department is starting to issue letters now.

Just pick one that looks good to you, the AR15.com guys have a list with all of them and pretty good pictures.

Find a FFL in your area and make it happen.;)

I personally like Lauer, Grizzly, Mega, Stag. But I'm sure there are other good ones out there.

Get something that is milspec and well known. You can't go wrong if you buy Stag Arms, Lauer Custom Weaponry(LCW-15), or other brands that are popular.

I bet you probably don't want to get some obscure brand either. Don't forget about the list that is going to be updated.

So many variety. Decide which one you like and go for it. :)
Stay away from vulcan lowers...

Just pick the stamp that you like (Grizzly has a bear on it).

Given that they are all the same as long as they are MilSpec, there should really only be four things to be concerned with when buying an off-list lower:

1- Popularity. The more obscure offlist lowers are more likely to be missed by the DOJ if/when the list is updated. This could definitely present a problem. So go with the lowers that are being sold with high frequency. Stag, Ameetec, DoubleStar, Mega, Rock River Arms, Lauer, Fulton and Sun Devil.

2- Brand Markings. Do you want a bear (Grizzly) or a deer (Stag)? An "A" (Ameetec) or a company logo (Rock River Arms)? This is personal preference.

3- Finish. Some lowers are finished differently than others. Some have a deep black finish (Mega) while others have a dull gray finish (Fulton) with others falling in-between. This may be irrelevant to some, but if you want to match your upper to the lower in terms of finish right off the shelf, it is something to consider.

4- That it isn't made by Vulcan. :D

Everything else is more than trivial. Some might argue price, but it's been proven that if you want want... you're going to get one regardless of price.

Aren't you supposed to be enjoying a family reunion (actually, enjoying and family runion might be an oxymoron) and not trying to add to the stable of maidens?

See, that is why you are a savvy business person. No freebies to family.

Yep, I sure do know what they say... "Say... does anyone know a good lawyer?" :D

You can check out pics of most of the lowers mentioned here on AR15.com

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=223495

The nice thing is that you're getting in on the game when the market's slowed down greatly.

Another thing to consider is what other parts you want to get. I went with a Stag because I'd want to be able to say that it's 100% Stag and not have to try and remember what brand the stock was, the lower parts kit were, etc.

It's nice to not have a Frankenstein AR.

Well, most AR parts are all made by a few machining shops (LMT, CMT, LAR), so since my LAR Grizzly Lower, CMMG Upper, and Bushmaster LPK were all made by LAR, I don't have a Frankenrifle. :D

I've got DoubleStar, Mega, Ameetec, Grizzly. Mega is the top dog in the armory; black, beautiful, perfectly finished. DoubleStar is just a hair lighter and also finished nicely. Ameetec and Grizzly look about the same. Good finishing and dark but not black.

A friend recently picked up a Stag and said he wasn't terrible thrilled about it. Let me rephrase that: he was totally stoked that he had an off list lower but didn't know what all the hype was about Stags. He didn't think it was any better, maybe not as well finished, as the Ameetec. I'll haven't seen it yet but we picked up our Ameetec together and liked what we saw.

Since there's obviously interest, would a thread devoted entirely to uh, "guns being modeled" be allowed to survive without being locked?

hah. I saw pink grips & stuff at a show in Reno. Now that my g/f is more interested in shooting, I'm half considering getting a lower for her and buying some of those pink parts.
