My day started pretty early when my alarm woke me at 0300; I got up and was on the road by 0330. Today was a little bit different. You see I had been checking the flows since my last Chinook trip in anticipation of going again. However the flows were pretty high so a Chinook trip was out for today.

Today’s destination was about as opposite as you can get from what I had been doing. I left the 9wt at home and took a couple of my 0wt rods along for today’s trip.

After a bit of a drive I arrived at my destination at around 0730. It was a cool and foggy morning; I got geared up and headed to the creek.

The creek looked just like I remembered. I got into the water and began to fish. It did not take long until the first willing resident came to hand.

I worked my way up stream catching fish all along the way. I will admit it was nice to get back to throwing dries upstream to trout. I had been so consumed with my Chinook quest I had almost forgotten the joy that is “creekin”.

After awhile the fog began to break up and I could enjoy the scenery. My stomach started to growl; so I decided to head back for a quick lunch. After I ate I decided to check the time it was already 1345. So I said to myself “I’ll just fish for another hour”…….Yea right!

I went back to the creek and resumed fishing. By this time there were fish rising everywhere. After catching a ton of brookies and bows I thought to myself “It must be an hour by now”. So I decided to head back.

Unfortunately when I got to the car and geared down I noticed that much more than an hour had gone by. So I packed up and started my 4+ hr drive home (it was 1600 when I left). Overall I really enjoyed the day. The creek seems to be the way I remembered it with one exception. There were the same numbers of fish as last year. However there seemed to be fewer fish in the 13”-14” range. I also saw several dead brookies in the water. They did not appear to have any signs of disease actually they looked quite good (despite the fact that they were dead).

I hope you enjoyed my first small water report for 2010.

I love creek fishing! Getting out where there is nobody else around hiking and fishing all day. Sure the fish are smaller but it is still my favorite type of fishing. Although there are those that don't understand (but that is good because it keeps them off the water).....

Creek fishing allows you to literally hike around and enjoy the outdoors while partaking in the sport. Yeah your not going to get monsters like you can out of rivers, lakes and oceans but its almost in a way a more rewarding experience.

Nice range report Thrillbilly!

Lots of people don't get why I would rather take my little 3 weight and wander an isolated creek catching 7 and 8 inch trout all day, than stand shoulder to shoulder with them and 40 other guys trying to catch a 20 inch trout on massive river...... and I'm really happy they don't get it!

I always enjoy your posts, you're one of the few that posts fishing in this section. i wish i knew how to fly fish, i have a rod but dont know the first thing about doing it right, i've tried but have had no luck, but my patience is low so thats kinda a downside for me.

Sorry that is a secret. But I will say that it is in Idaho.

One of the nice things I enjoy since the move from CA; is the fact that there are bigger rivers here where I can go catch 20"+ fish, and not have crowds. With that being said, creek fishing is still my favorite.

Nope, not the Sawtooths.........

Thanks! That is why I take the time to write them. Not sure where in CA you live. However if I were you I would get some basic casting lessons. Then I would join a CA based FF site such as flyfishingaddicts and try to hook up with some people in your area.

There is a learning curve to this. I remembered when I really sucked at it. Sure I caught fish but not consistently. Someone once told me that eventually it will all click, and then you will catch fish. The bottom line is practice, practice, practice. Also reading on tactics etc. is a good idea.
