View Full Version : Legal to mount pistol to AR?

My gut says no, but a friend and I were kicking around the idea today.

Say I put a scope mount on my USP, which attaches to the forward accessory rail on the bottom of the frame and rises above the gun with a second rail, enabling scope attachment.

So what if I used mounting hardware to attach the scope rail to an accessory rail on the underside of my AR15 similar to the M203 or the shotgun mounting?

Would the USP then become part of an assault weapon? If so, it wouldn't have a fixed mag or long enough barrel. The hypothetical AR (I have one, but I don't have any rails) would have a BB and other evil features.

The gun is almost totally pointless, but it would A. look cool and B. make one hell of a home defense weapon.

Any thoughts?

Hey I never said I'd do it. :(

I was just curious if it was legal, and I didn't think so. I knew it would draw flak...but curiosity got the better of me.

the common concensus in the NFA world is that if you mount a pistol (or an AOW) under a rifle, that the rifle's shoulder stock makes that pistol an SBR since it is now a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder with a barrel <16".

Mako tactical actually makes a mount. It attaches to a glock mag base plate.

Ah OK. I knew it had to be illegal somehow. I forgot about pistol with shoulder stock thing.

And let me reiterate, I never thought of actually doing it :)

so what if you attach an a legal shotgun without the PG and stock, which is still over 26" under your ar or any other rifle? is that considered legal?

Hey OP, I'm sorry you're receiving so much flak for this. Some people think that if something is out of the ordinary and doesn't have a specific purpose for them, they can ridicule and make fun of whomever suggested it.

ke6guj is correct, the pistol mounted to the AR is generally considered a short barreled rifle because of the stock.

nobody knows for sure. Similar question regaring mounting a registered AOW under a pistol. Does that make the pistol an AOW as well? What if I register my AR-pistol as an AOW before I mount an AOW Super Shorty under it? It should be legal, but we don't know for sure.

edit: thinking about it more, a pistol under a pistol would probably be considered an unregistered AOW. Basically it would be the same thing as installling a VFG since now you have a firearm that is conceallable and designed to be held with two hands.

In reference to public education I think the UC system is pretty awesome. Berkley is top in its class. I just can't stand the Berkley liberals. UCLA's education is solid. UCSF is first class. UC Hastings is nothing to scoff at. Although considering their location I don't trust their ability to interpret the constitution. The list goes on...

K-12 public schools might be brain dead. (I am an LAUSD alumni... after 12 years I am confident of this statement)

K-12 Privates are all over the place.

USC is second to none :-d... but I could be bias. (I am a 2004 USC Engineering Alumni)

this thread will be completely off topic in 3... 2... 1...

I was referring to public K-12 schools. California has abysmal stats for that. Some say a lot of it is due to ESL students/immigrants, but I don't know if that holds water.

I graduated from Sac State, and there is a LOT of room for improvement there. I'm not going to go into details, but the writing level of some of the students whose work I edited was something I'd expect from a sixth grader.

ETA: Yes, we have some very good schools in CA. If they were all at that level, we'd be just fine. And Sac State is fine, for that matter, but the standards for success are too low. We need to fail people who just don't try or can't make it. This whole "everyone needs to graduate high school and go on to college" mentality is malarkey, and all it does is cheapen the high school diploma. I think a BA/BS is the equivalent today of a high school diploma circa 1950.

I've been going through the backlog but can't find it right now. I'll post something in the other thread linking back here to see if Jack will get involved.
