Little girls like to dress up Barbies, MEN like to dress up ARs.

So what 2-3 AR products would you add to this:

Fixed rear standalone sight (remove the carry handle) and an optic, preferably non-powered. Wouldn't really be KISS anymore but still pretty close to it.

A Sling is like a barrel, or a magazine...its not an option.

For function I would go with a flashlight, its not wise to shoot at things you can't see. Which may force you to change handguards. You don't need a quad rail. Just a way to attach the flashlight and make sure its secure.

For added function look into a Magpul BAD. If its not for you, thats fine. Some like it some don't.

For form I'd add a better stock such as a Magpul CTR or MOE, LMT. Or you could just get a CAA saddle. A proper cheek weld adds to comfort which increase accuracy under stress.

Why?

The carry handle IS a fixed sight. A damn good one too.

OP: Magpul MOE stock. Much more comfy than a standard M4 stock. Add the Magpul Enhanced Buttpad for a little more length and comfort.

If it were mine and I wanted to keep it KISS but add 3 items it would be:

Sling
MOE buttstock
MOE handguards

Those are the exact items I was gunna say..weird :)

I took alot of time trying to get my AR to look identical to what the guys guns look like over in Iraq right now, and I just switched back to my magpul CTR stock because I was tired of how cheap the plastic milspec M4 stock was, and im dumb for keeping that stock for as long as I did. Magpul FTW, Much lighter too

VLTOR stock, aimpoint mounted to a QD mount (this will count as one item) and a good BUIS. (It really should have a sling already so I shouldn't have to mention this.)

I'd consider putting a light on there but that's if you want to use it for HD. A sling would be a good idea too. Maybe cut down the carry handle or put a fixed BUIS to shave a bit more weight. MOE handguard if you're feeling generous as well as MIAD or MOE grip. Might as well go CTR or MOE stock as well.

Everyones definition of KISS is different. But, having said that, I say add a good sling.

Thanks for the input.

Don't add anything...

Remove the vertical foregrip, and switch to A1 style handguards and an fixed stock. Then you will have a true KISS build.... and a damn nice looking AR.

mordak6actual
05-15-2010, 6:25 AM
IMO, especially as a KISS project...
http://www.surefire.com/G2-Led (Surefre G2 LED flashlight) $69.00
http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=269&parents=89,168 (G2 mount ring) $17.00
http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=203&parents=89,164 (GG&G SLiC) $37.95

That would be all you would need. Yes, the flashlight would get hot if you had significant sustained fire, I wouldn't recommend this setup for military use (not worried about Nitrolon melting, more worried about heat getting through the polymer to the batteries).

Total cost: $123.95 (that's all retail, minus tax/shipping) Cost vs. weight factor is as low as it will go minus doing something even lighter-weight like a X300 or Surefire M300A Scout.

Last option would be a SF tailcap/remote switch assembly but that doubles the cost of the setup. http://www.surefire.com/XM07-Remote-Tailcap-Switch-Classic-Millennium at $129.00 for the switch and remote "pigtail".

That's keeping it KISS. And yes, MOE like some recommended might make it more comfortable to shoot but personally KISS is about what you have, what is easy to get, and costs the least but meets your needs. . . .YMMV

KISS to me is ultimate simplicity and I think you've got it there. If you change it, the "true" KISS fans will say it isn't so. Also, because you have a flat top with a detachable carry handle, most purists will say you've already defeated yourself for staying KISS as its not an A1/A2 style upper.

anniepoks
05-15-2010, 9:26 AM
keep it simple, not too tacticool.

As a KISS build and assuming you don't want optics on it, I'd dump the vertical foregrip, swap out the stock with a SOPMOD, and perhaps add a light.

jasonnorcal
05-15-2010, 4:12 PM
Just a flashlight really. Bad things usually happen at night.

Grumpyoldretiredcop
05-15-2010, 6:09 PM
Why?

The carry handle IS a fixed sight. A damn good one too.

I mean a standalone sight that frees up the remainder of the upper's rail for an optic mount. The carry handle is a perfectly good fixed sight, just don't like mounting an optic to one.

G-Fotay!! Ssup. Nice rifle. I'd agree with the previous posters, ADD AMMO, rifle GTG. Cool pic. But.

The carry handle seems pre-historic to me. Poor ergos. If I'm going to be keeping a rifle close to me and ready to fire on my enemy I want that stock to hit my shoulder and get my reticle on target ASAP. ACOG replaces carry handle, single swivel on buttstock for bungee style sling. While doing other tasks with both of my hands, I am always mindful of how I would bring my rifle to bear as quickly as possible. With my single point ready to hit my shoulder, I think it's a big evolutionary step up from a carry handle. I like to keep all my weapons close to me. A carry handle could, potentially, possibly, move me further away from my rifle due to inattention. No thanks.

Fixed buttstock more kiss. One less gimmicky thing to be fiddling with. "Oh, what if I'm wearing my armored vest"--give me a break. Adjustable stocks have their place when the AR is to be shared by husband and wife, that I'll admit. Think about it, anything more than the sights and trigger are merely distractions.

Foregrip in my opinion needs to be quickly and easily removed without tools. I had no intention of mounting a foregrip until I ran across the Y/M unit. The addition of that particular foregrip on this particular rifle is nothing short of hilarious. Note that I have mounted it as far out as possible. Otherwise I'd just grip the mag/magwell. The mounting rail is cut down to a minimum too. I like to crush the butt into my shoulder, with rearward tension on the pistolgrip, and push forward and slightly down on the foregrip. Dump a mag in under 2 seconds.

In this configuration rifle is still light enough to be able to be shot single-handed extended like a pistol. Top fun. Keep it light, simple, and accurate.

This rifle is my kiss build:
Ace rifle-length skeletor
Blocked and glued and pinned 10/30 Pmag/Prince50 tightened like a mug
LaRue and ACOG
Stag 2H with JPE tanker
Wolff springs
some etc

well since you already have the sling and what not i would add
1. Magpul B.A.D. lever
2. Bcm gunfighter charging handle
3. Magpul stock either ctr or acs
keeps the rifle mostly stock looking with the added benefits of each item.

Do not add anything you won't benefit from. If you think you'd benefit from good optics, I'd recommend an aimpoint micro.
