I am looking to get a new .308 bolt action rifle with a heavy barrel (greater than 20"s) - what are your recommendations and why? Lets say I don't want to spend more than $1000 for the rifle itself (optics not included).

Savage 10FP or Rem 700 in their respective varieties

Rem 700 if you want to have more future upgrades.

Sav 10FP for out of the box precision with less options for upgrades.

Do you know much about the remington 700 sps varmit? I like the longer barrel... what do you all think?

There are a couple of nice setups in the for sale section, e.g., this one (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=288900&highlight=savage).

I would look to find a Savage 10FCP McMillan. The stock alone is over $500. If you get to $1,076, it is yours for that delivered price from www.budsgunshop.com. Out of stock right now though. Look for model #18142. Has a 24" barrel.

I suggest you look at the Savage line of heavy barreled rifles. I have not shot one, but I have heard many good things about them. The Remington 700 rifles are popular, but I have heard they don't live up to expectations. Marlin may come out with a heavy barreled XS-7, but don't hold your breath.

For out of the box performance I'd go with either the Savage 10FP or a Tikka T3 Varmint, with a slight edge in accuracy going to the Tikka. If you are thinking about adding upgrades or accessories later on, Remington 700 is the best platform to go with.

Tikka T3 Varmint or Tactical FTW.

Remington 700 P.

H.S. Precision Stock
26" Heavy Barrel - free floated
tons of aftermarket parts and support

If you look diligently on online auction sites you could find one NIB for about $800-850 shipped.

Slap a scout mount and optics on there with a bipod and you are long range ready.

I would get a 5R.

I'm a M700 kind of guy, but if i could buy another .308 in that price range, i'd look at a SAKO T3 just for kicks...

I'd get a m700 sps v then upgrade the stock to what your budget allows. In some cases might come cheaper than buying a 700p with hs stock

That would be my suggestion but they are more than the OP is looking to pay. If you are willing to spend just a little more than 1k then I would purchase the 10FCP with McMillan. If not, I'm with the others 10FP or 700 but leaning towards the Savage. Check them both out at you local gun shop if you can. -Ben

Savage cause Remington is like a A hole ( everyone has one). I like Savage rifles better anyway.
