What are those swabs for in cleaning kits? Do you use them with solvent or oils or just run through dry before you go shooting? They are a PITA to clean.

They're used to put a light coat of oil in the barrel after cleaning with patches. I have a couple but I use patches to oil the barrel out of habit.

I thought you weren't supposed to oil your bore?

I always oil the barrel when the firearm will be stored for a longer period of time. But before shooting, I clean out the oil with a few patches

I use mine for copper solvent when I'm doing a deep clean of the bore. For everything else I just use Otis patches.

I only use them to apply solvents in my more accurate rifles.

I put in a *very* light coat of oil after cleaning. I don't get to the range as often as I'd like and my guns can sit for a while.

It helps to prevent rust, IMO.
