My first build. When doing test with dummy round. Using orig metal Colt magazine. The bolt won't hold open when I eject the dummy round. What did I do wrong ?? Bolt only hold open when I depress the bolt catch. Thanks.

That is how the gun is designed (assuming you are talking about AR-15s).

When you stick a magazine in there, whenever you pull the charging handle back, it will lock back. If there is no magazine in there, it won't lock back, and you will have to press the bolt catch.

The bolt should lock back/open when you shoot off your last live round to.

If it is ejecting the round, I am assuming he is.

I'm thinking the magazine, since it is empty and should push the bolt catch

Yeah pulled the ch all the way with the now empty magazine still attached. And don't lock back.

Separate your lower from your upper and put in an empty mag and see if the follower in the magazine pushes up on the bolt catch.

+1 but make sure the hammer is cocked and the safety is on, that way the bolt catch will move freely.

Have you tried another magazine? Could be the follower not going high enough to activate the bolt catch.

Yeah as Nrakid said make sure the hammer is cocked back + safety on. And once you determine whether the magazine locks backs the bolt, be sure not to just pull the trigger and allow the steel hammer to smack into the aluminum receiver. Let it down slowly. Hope you figure out whats the problem

Pffft, I launch spitballs off the hammers on my separated lower receivers.
