I brought my Rem 870 into California last weekend from my permanent home in Arizona. I have a California ID, but an AZ driver's license.

I'll be keeping it here for about 5 or 6 months, til I go back home (HD shotgun). Do I need to register it here?

No, you're good to go (http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/index.php/Firearms_registration#DOJ_FAQ).

So the police can't run your name and pull up non-AW long guns right (http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/index.php/FAQ#How_do_I_buy_a_long_gun_.28rifle_or_shotgun.29 .3F)? Just handguns?

Long guns (except pre-ban AW) aren't registered in California. They would have to go to the FFL in Arizona and pull the DROS to trace the serial number. Only handguns are registered in California.

you should also be able to bring any legally purchased handguns from AZ here for up to 60 days w/o registering them.

You don't need to do anything except enjoy shooting it here :)

I am the only person that can make that 870 legal in CA. You must bring it to me with 1000 shells and 1000 clay pigeons. After I'm done, it will be CA legal.
