View Full Version : What will you carry when CGF restores CA carry rights?

I sold my pistols and am down to one full size 1911, and I wanted to focus on rifles and shooting more. But now I'm considering getting a carry pistol, in anticipation of the good things that will continue to come our way in the coming years. I've been considering a few carry pistols --

What are your choices?

Kimber CDP .45

Kimber Crimson Carry .45 (probably remove the laser grips)

Also considering S&W .357 Magnum

I'm going to sling a full sized uzi handgun...

or a brace of 1911's....

or a Colt SAA in .45LC

or possibly a glock g17...

it depends on what else I'm wearing....

So what gun goes best with a leopard print thong, bunny slippers, pasties and watter wings?

I'm going to carry a full size, steel 1911 Gov't model with 2 spare mags.

I figure that will last a week before I get tired of lugging it around.

Then I'll switch to a Glock 19 and a single spare mag. I'll probably do that for a month or two.

Then I'll get lazy and complacent and will finally wind up with a 38 Airweight in a pocket holster. A single speed strip will be in the other pocket.

Anyways, that's my current plan.

I'll carry what I carried when I had a permit from Kern, a full size Wilson. Using a quality holster and belt it was fine and I got the shoot ability of a full size rather than compromising with something that I couldn't control with my larger hands. I look forward to when we can all carry in California, regardless of what county we live in.

Then it's not shall issue, you can ccw with no permit.

AZ is still shall-issue. SB1108 didn't make any changes to AZ's CCW permit system. All it did was remove the penalty for carrying without a permit. You still need a CCW permit to carry in restaurants that serve alcohol, you still need a CCW permit to skip your NICS checks, you still need a CCW permit to carry within 1000' of a school (though that's never enforced in AZ anyways...). Point is, if you're serious about carrying, you still want to get your CCW permit.

Depends on the circumstances of the carry: anything from my P229 .40 S&W, though my (soon to be had) P239 .40 S&W, to my P238 .380. Or heck maybe a .223 rifle. or 12 ga pump shotgun in case of zombies like in 28 days later or Resident Evil scenarios <wink>

My Glock 26 9mm

Probably the best compromise for CCW in most places if you cannot get a Sig P250 in 9 mm, even though I am not a Glock fan openly--simple elegant, reliable, concealable, accurate though "fat". And this from a guy who prefers Sigs--a P250 is a Glock only better. I can only imagine the love fest a Glock fan will subject us to ;-)

I figure that will last a week before I get tired of lugging it around.

-- Michael

Post of the year, although I hope you mean speed strip in the strong side back pocket.

With the right pocket carry snubby you will never be made and always be armed. Unless you are going to wear a jacket, hawaiian shirt, or coat everyday, even the best IWB/compact OWB is going to be a worry, and all the pictures in the mirror won't convince me otherwise, unless it includes both hands over the head trying to get something off the top shelf. My path to doable CCW was pretty much Elsquid's plan.

Why do people have such little faith?
You have Machiavelli in you sig and still ask that? Might want to re-read The Prince--he is right on about human nature. I have unsupported hope we'll get reasonable CCW in CA but faith in CA's politicians and people? Nope. I read the Huff Post every day as one of my news sources to keep tabs on the enemy and the volume and illogic of anti-gun comments makes me realize the likelihood of CA being a free state is on par with expecting that the Pope being elected US President is likely.

Good observation and thought process.
Mentally already went through that to similar conclusion, but my last one (and lasting one) is a Sig P238 and extra mag all stainless. But I am considering a Sig P239 .40 S&W or 9 mm single-stack for days when I want a bit more punch and can wear it undetected.

Federal courts will bring the right to carry to California. The politicians will probably have nothing to do with it.

First, that's if we get the incorporation with McDonald we hope for and that is far from certain.
Second, the Supreme Court makeup is going to change at least once during Obama's presidency and California politicians will affect the choice.

Like I said I have hope--unsupported (by history) hope. Though Heller was a nice result and somewhat encouraging.

Wow, this gets me thinking. If I had a CCW, what would I carry?

I think I would try to carry my M&P9. But I don't know if I'll be able to conceal with with my 5'10" mesomorphic body. It seems like only the more heavy folks are able to conceal the full size handguns without a problem. Once CA starts issuing CCW's (I'm really hoping Bill Hunt gets elected), then I'll start saving up for a CC gun. Maybe an M&Pc to keep my platform consistent, or I may join the dark side with a Gen4 Glock 19.

My CCW gun is a Smith & Wesson M&P40 Compact.

+1 These are great guns, and I got one a few years back because I hoped to be able to get a CCW some day. Well, that and I wanted a .40 S&W. I like mine a lot, but it isn't as comfortable for long shooting sessions as a full-sized gun. But I would still carry this or a Glock 26 if the evil gun laws ever come down. I like .40, but I still have high cap 9mm mags for the glock.

Sig P228 (If Bill Hunt gets elected sheriff. You orange county residents go out and vote) Go Bill HUNT!!!!

Amen to this! Did you get the snail mail flyer that actually says, in print, "Bill also believes strongly in the Second Amendment right to personal protection. As Sheriff, he will uphold those rights by issuing CCW (Concealed Carry Weapons) permits to any law abiding resident that can legally possess a firearm and meet county requirements."

AWESOME, huh?

So I've actually given serious thought to which gun I'd like to carry and have set aside the funds for the CCW class and application.

I'm going to qualify on a S&W CS9, Glock 19C, and Sig P229 but will most likely carry the S&W CS9.

Sig P228 (If Bill Hunt gets elected sheriff. You orange county residents go out and vote) Go Bill HUNT!!!!

You better ****in' believe it! I have been anticipating this day for quite some time. I have a good feeling he will win, I haven't seen anything about any of the other two candidates. So I will be shooting for the end of the year to get my CCW:43: Gonna be carrying either my Springerized XD service in .45 or pick up a sub-compact XD in 9mm.

I'd love to visit the planet the OP is living on, but here in KA we DO NOT have a RIGHT to carry (never did) and unfortunately, never will. Soon the loophole allowing UOC will be closed and that will be it.

Sorry for the cold bucket of reality.

Like stated previously, if Bill Hunt gets elected, so go vote, he is going to issue them to all that cal legally posses them.

For all you guys that love CA but hate the fact that you can't ccw, you don't have to move out of state. Pretty sure Kern County issues more permits than any county in CA. It does take a while to get, but you can get it. I just bought a G 26 in anticipation of getting my permit in a few months.

You guys pick pistols that can take a full on gun fight. I mean its good to be prepared, but how bad can it be if they know u have a gun? IMHO a compact/subcompact 9mm can easily do the job.

Kern County? Because I TOTALLY want to go live in the middle of NOWHERE just so I can have limited CCW privileges (3 guns max, still limited to 10 rounds, etc...) and still be bound by all of CA's other stupid laws.... Bakersfield, woooooo!

Thanks, but no thanks.

Why do people have such little faith?

I don't know about you guys, but I have 100% faith. I mean, we stopped AB962 dead in its tracks, just like they promised we would. Don't you remember how we were able to persuade Governor Schwarzenneger not to sign AB962?

I know what I'd like to carry and posted it, but yes, only if the SCOTUS levels the playing field with a wide ruling on McDonald et al will we get even a chance. But that chance will be slim because California now has in place local top cops and other government officials to ensure we never get CCW in any of the populated areas of the state.

The same thing I ccw carry now,a small frame revolver J frame size. You do not want to carry an expensive trick 1911 when a $500.00 Glock etc will do the job . Consider the whole picture. No matter what the internet experts say that is all you need.

Sig 556 pistol with 30rnd mag and no bullet button :) how "restored" are our rights gonna be? I have this feeling that we could restore all our rights quickly but no body would want to pay the potential ultimate price.

Also consider this which many people overlook until they get bitten by it--if you use it, you'll lose it for a protracted time as it is evidence especially in the PRK. So a cheap but serviceable semi-auto or revolver in 9mm or .38 or .380 is best. I am partial to the Glock 26 but would pack my Sig P238 right now as I don't have a Glock 26 yet.

In sum, I'd think small, concealable and a balance of cost with reliability.

Hahaha, Kern County may not be the coolest place in California to live. (If I could afford it I would love to live closer to the beach) I was just throwing it out there as an aternative to moving out of state. I love living in CA, I love the Mountains, I love the beach, Vegas is not too far away. Great snowboarding within a few hours. I don't think I could move away from the coast.

What I would LIKE to carry is a nice 1911 frame in .45. What I probably would wind up carrying most of the time is a LCP in a wallet holster. But then I don't drink, hang out with people who do, hang out with or know anyone who has been in jail, go to bars, party, stay out at night, or go to any "fun" places, and live in an upscale bedroom community a block from a police station with a police video surveillance camera aimed at my house so my life is generally pretty boring.

Not true, you can carry in many counties of California, what we are waiting on is the "Shall issue" clause so that all counties in CA will issue.

The first sign of your early demise are the words "I can't"

I'LL probably carry two Ruger Super BlackHawk 44 mangle-ums' in duel shoulder holster rigs with a 50 round belt loop for under my shirt. Probably a 9" switch blade in each 18" black spit-shined & laced logging boots with duel sp101's on opposite side of each boot too. Golly gosh I can't wait.
.....realistically i'll probably carry a blue snub Speed-Six .357 in Galco slide with speed loader in a pocket- or maybe a sig p6.

G19.
Small, light, easy to carry, easy to conceal, as accurate and powerful as needed for close range 'oh crap' moments. And I already own one.

I was very much in the 1911 school for a long time. Then I carried one for awhile (NV). Honestly, as much as I love those guns, they are just not fun to lug around. I suppose one of the smaller models might be better suited for carrying, but I just don't have the time and money to invest in all that.

On a side note - how are those G36s to shoot?
Seems like it would be an awful lot to hold on to a .45 that weight/size.

It's in fact very pleasant to shoot a G36. Follow up shots are pretty easy too. The G36 is not a sub compact like they try to sell it as, but rather a G19 sized gun.

Thank you juice5610 for the reality checkpoint
