I just pulled my new to me Smith & Wesson Model 29-3 out of 10 day jail. Having always wanted one from seeing the Dirty Harry movies I jumped on this one A guy at work said his father had one he was looking to sell but he was having a problem with it. The cylinder was very hard to close and you had to beat it back open.

I ending up getting it for $300 figuring if I had to throw a few hundred bucks at it to get it working good I'd still be ahead.

It's in pretty good shape but was VERY dirty with lots of dust and dirt but the bluing is almost perfect and still has a nice shine.

Well I got it home today and stripped her down for a good cleaning and lubing. That's when I noticed the extractor rod was loose. I tightened it back up hand tight and wouldn't you know it the cylinder now closes and opens up fine!

I'll have a range report this weekend. The only 44mag I could find locally was some Magtech SJSP so I'll see how that works.

You should have it checked out to make sure the ejector rod and/or the crane aren't bend from whatever force was applied to them due to the loose ejector rod.

It sounds like the cylinder pin has turned out a bit - one twist in the right direction and some loctite cures the problem is my guess.

Thanks for the reply's. Like I said before i figured out quickly that the extractor rod was loose. The cylinder now opens and closes fine. When I bought it I figured if I had to put another $300 into it I would still be ahead but luckily it was a simple fix. I need to get some blue lock tight so this doesn't loosen again.

Does anyone know to find out the year it was made? The S/N is AED8XXX.
