I am looking through the Brownells 1911 catalog and it looks like you can order every part of the gun? Is there a part you can order that has to be FFLed?

Legally, the frame. Although given the creative mailing restrictions to CA thought up by some mail order companies don't be surprised if there's something on there that someone won't sell. Cheaper than dirt won't mail M! carbine rear sights claiming they are "assault weapon" parts and Bond Derringer won't mail barrels to CA unless you have an FFL. Still, off the top of my head I can't think of anything on a 1911 a company could restrict, so you should be able to get everything but the frame through the mail.

The receiver. Everyone else said frame, but the receiver is another word for it. :D

I heard from a friend's cousin's brother's ex-girlfriend's hot friend that it was the recoil spring - can somebody clarify?

Perhaps the OP should frame his question a different way?

The only part that needs to go through a FFL is the frame. Every other part is not restricted in any way

Ok thanks for all the replies. Actually the picture did help. haha, they actually have the frame in the catalog. I thought it would be one of those deals where you get an AR parts kit with everything but the lower receiver.
