Am relatively new and was wondering what would be considered cheap ($$) .45 ACP ammo for target/plinking. I've seen WWB .45 run ~50 cents per round here in the sf bay area. Thanks!

If you're lucky enough to find 100VP WWB at Wallyworld, they run about $37 dollars. I think $20-21 is a good buy for factory ammo, anything less is a great buy.

Or reload and bring it to about $8 a box after you collected some brass.

yeah even wolf is getting expensive, go to the gun show tomorrow at the cow palace , i was there today. if you can find some for $17-$20 your doing good. thats for 230 FMJ. thats considering your going to be shooting at paper targets. I think its good to run some hollow points once a while, but I do see people running them all the time through their guns. I think its kind of pointless for paper, unless you want to practice for home defence.

Thanks for the replies. $37 for 100 sounds like a friggin good deal - even with tax, that comes to about 41 cents per round.

I actually just came back from the gun show today (1st time) and it wasn't what I'd expected it to be. The ammo (miwall corp?) vendor in the middle of everything was crazy busy with the .45 section. I think the prices were all about the same as some of the online places when you add in the sales tax. I think the winchester white box vp of 100 was going for 47 or something like that.

Good to know that 17-21 per box of 50 for 230gr fmj is what I'll keep an eye out for. I've ordered a few boxes of the CCI Lawman .45 230gr TJM for ~19 a box (before shipping) and S&B's 230gr. FMJs for ~18 a box (before shipping).

The local guys down in pacifica only have s&b's and they're going for 25 a box and Tabor's in San Bruno has em for 29.99 a box (YIKES). So, I am now so tempted to look into purchasing a 9 or 40 - checked out the xd 9, browning, and p2000. However, would grab any provate locally available p30 through ppt in a heart beat...but I digress...

Reload. There are 7000 grains in 1 lb. One lb of powder costs approx $25. A .45 ACP round takes around 5 grains. That makes approx 1400 rounds per lb of powder. That makes your powder cost about $0.02 per charge. If you scrounge for brass, that's free... bullets? Well, you can get lead 200gr SWC bullets (500 pcs) for about $50. Primers are about $3.5/100 (about $0.03/ea). What does this all mean? Well for a box of 50... That really does come out at approx $8/box of 50. Considering that you can order reman cartridges for about $16 at midway (not including shipping)... You're saving about $8/box or more!

I load for my Garand. I save about $0.50/round over commercial by rolling my own. I save about a dime per round if I buy surplus. So, for a box of 20, I save anywhere from about $2 to about $10.

People that reload either shoot for less $$$ after the initial investment in equipment is recovered, or they shoot more for the same amount of $$$.

Walmart has the Federal 230gr 50rd boxes for $16. So $0.32 + tax.

But right now, I consider $0.40 or less per round a decent deal.

16.95 for a box of 50 Blazer Aluminum. That's a good price if you don't reload.

Just be aware some ranges don't like this stuff because they have to sort out the brass to reload their own rounds. Usually the same guys that don't allow wolf on their ranges.

BVAC reloads are made on commercial presses with once-fired brass. Good, cheap stuff. Russell, the store manager, is a good guy too.

For factory .45ACP brass-cased 230gr. FMJ, the absolute most I'll pay is $.40/round. Anyone paying more is getting ripped off.

Here is a helpful site that does price searches on online ammo:

My reloads with cast bullets run around $3 a box of 50

you guys must have a lot of money to be burning up a couple hundred bucks worth of ammo at every session.

I think it odd that some are worried about a couple hundred bucks here or there in the original cost of a gun.. or even a grand for that matter.. when they don't seem to mind spending many times that much in ammo in just a year or so.

Thanks for the link. I just ordered 500 rounds. At around 37 cents a round, it's almost walmart prices.

At around 37 cents a round, it's almost walmart prices.

Except at Walmart, you get brass-cased ammo instead of aluminum-cased ammo at that price. ;) I guess it wouldn't matter as much unless you're plan on collecting and reusing the brass.

I just bought 500 rounds of .45 CCI Blazer for $17.99 per 50 from Natchez Shooters' Supply:

Natchez SS .45 Blazer ammo (http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=CC3570&src=tpCtgAm)

When they get a shipment you have to move quickly because it sells out fast. They are out right now. Shipping costs add about $2 per box.
