Not literally. I've decided on a budget of $1,000 for an AR (excluding optics), but with all the options out there, my newb head is about to explode. I know most of you guys can literally write a build list with approx. prices off the top of your heads, so I'd like to tap into that. Thanks in advance.

Caliber - 5.56 or 9mm if it can be reliable.

A) Do the research yourself ( because most people are too busy with there own things and it will help you get exactly what you want)

B) If you expect to get the kind of gun you want, you should at least say what you want it for.

Since you listed no preferences, I say delton lol. (thats a spiteful reccomendation)

Work with a Middleman FFL and buy a S&W AR15 from CDNN. You'll get a ton of magazines in the deal that can be used for rebuilds, or converted to 10 rounders.
You'll be at around $1000 in the whole deal with a ton of mags. Keep the AR stock and master the irons until you save money for upgrades.

Come to think of it, I wanna build a list for myself. A budget build with quality parts where it counts. Nothing I don't need. Hrmmm... if I come up with something, I'll PM you.

Im in the same boat. I went to ar15.com and looked through their build photos section. Most people listed exactly what they have on their rifles, so you can sort of pick and choose.

My favorite is a 16" chrome-lined 5.56mm barrel with a YHM Phantom flash hider, YHM gas block/flip-up front sight, flat-top upper with Daniel Defense Omega 7" free-float rails (probably unecessary on a carbine), M4 feed ramps, Magpul CTR Stock, TangoDown vertical foregrip, CAA pistol grip, Magpul enhanced trigger guard and Magpul 1- or 2-point sling. My lower is a Spike's, and my lower parts kit is CMMG.

All I have so far is the lower ($122 OTD), my pistol grip ($30 shipped) and my LPK ($63 shipped). I expect to be in it for (hopefully) a hair under $1k.

I'm still undecided on 1:9 or 1:7 twist.

All in black, otherwise it wouldn't be an EBR. Maybe on my next build I'll go with other colors.

Figure out what style rifle you like (target, tactical, etc), what accessories you like, and look in the for sale section.....

Upper, BCM, Daniel Defense, or Riflegear. All around $600, All are excellent options. The rest is preference, but with $1000 budget you should be able to do any of the above. Pick your logo you like for your lower and buy that one. They are all the same. Don't wine about identical color matching and you'll be GTG. I've seen a few full factory assembled rifles that didn't even match between the upper and lower

you got it all backwards! you do endless hours of searching and online shopping and put together a list that is then critiqued by people in the know.

first thing i think you should do is raise your budget to about $1200...

$1000 is cutting it a bit close, IMO.

i'd jump on this deal haha if he can build you a rifle to suit your needs for $100.00 dollars then pay up!! and get moving ;) but more seriously i'll put one together for ya for a sweet price how's $995.00??:44:

Any lower and lpk will do. Spend a little more on the upper, I'd say BCM 16" middy with a BCM hp/mp bcg. For stocks there's nothing wrong with a cheapo m4 stock, a little better would be a magpul moe\ctr, and I think LMT SOPMOD is the king(I'm saving up for mine) My .02

Eh I only went $1043.24 even with the rail. He could at least shave $250 off going with regular grip, handguards, and a $50 buttstock kit from dsarms

This: $739- made by DD for Riflegear.
http://riflegear.com/p-774-riflegear-16-carbine-rifle-kit.aspx

plus this: $119 + tax + dros- support a CA firearms mfg
http://riflegear.com/p-681-jd-machine-ar15-stripped-lower-receiver.aspx

Plus this: $25- need it.
http://riflegear.com/p-58-bullet-button.aspx

Plus this: $69- need this too
http://riflegear.com/p-780-daniel-defense-a15-fixed-rear-sight.aspx

$739 rifle kit, carbine
$155 (lower +tax + dros)
$25 mag lock
$69 rear sight

Total:$988 pre-tax.

you can probably save some on the rear sight by going with MBUS.

You would have very VERY good rifle. Daniel Defense is top notch.

^ Thanks for the effort tom. I wasn't asking you guys to read my mind, I left the request ambiguous so I could see what you guys had built for under $1,000.

Do my own homework? What am I turning my AR in for a grade later? ****ing trolls.

I think you misinterpreted what they were getting at. Although I agree it may sometimes sound condescending and rude. The point people are trying to make is researching what you want exactly for yourself leads to less second guessing in the long run if your setup is truly what you want. I like yourself however, liked seeing other people's ideas and setups to decide what combination I wanted to build. Even at that, I'm still looking for ideas to top it off 100%

Here's my suggestion.

Go through several pages and look for the numerous threads that basically ask the same thing.

Read through all of them and see what they end up with.

Compile all of the parts that you want from all of those different builds to make it your own.

I know how you feel gotime - I am very new to the whole AR thing (new this site even! first post) but from what my experienced friends tell me... don't let yourself go crazy with all the options - for the most part you can pretty much buy the parts you like, staying away from the obvious no nos and you will come away with an AR you like and at a price you can afford... at the noob level, you're not going to see a huge difference in quality between manufacturers.

now some may disagree as they have their favorite model or a bad experience with another, I'm not saying to go out there and buy the cheapest tacticool setup there is... just do some browsing, find the parts you like and search them more deeply, that's how I found this site, and It's been a HUGE help so far with everything

in fact savageno4's suggestion got me thinking in a few more directions, and might save me some money, THANKS :D

Not sure if this is your taste but you could build the following for around 1K.

1. Dros a lower (Stag, J&D, Spikes, S&W) after tax and dros $180.00
2. Lower parts kit (DPMS, Stag) $59.00
3. Rifle Gear has a nice upper on sale for $599.00
4. Magpul MOE furniture (Stock, Hand guard, trigger guard, grip) $120.00
5. Buffer tube kit $60.00
6. Bullet Button $25.00
7. Pmag $20.00

This would make a nice first set up for just over 1K, again not sure if this is what you were looking for.

Seriously, just do the research yourself. It is fun and addictive as hell. You will find yourself changing your mind a million times. It may sound frustrating, but you will learn a ton from the experiences of others that they have been willing to post. Just don't get too obsessed with all of the "X is the best" or "Y sucks". If you do your research to find out what is reliable and what isn't, then get a good idea of what you need/want (remember that "the mission drives the equipment"), and remember that there are a ton of quality manufacturers out there, you will be very happy with your AR.

You can get an OLL from most anyone, but if you search around there are a few to avoid. (You might consider a Calguns lower, and I happen to like the logo on the SI Defense lowers.) IMHO, LPKs are pretty much the same, but others are going to have a different opinion. (I happen to like RRA LPKs.) You won't go wrong if you consider parts from Colt, Noveske, LMT, BCM, Daniel Defense, Stag, Rock River or Bushmaster. Sorry that I omitted someone's favorite manufacturer. (I think BCM has great stuff.) But this is only my opinion, and it is worth what you just paid for it.

add that to your cart and it is $999. It's a very good basic rifle. Without knowing what your intended use for the rifle is it is the best I could come up with. Good luck.

Hey, building and AR is pretty easy and straightforward. It's just not that hard. Accessorizing what you want will be the hardest part of your research.

Just search Youtube and you'll find video instruction on there as well. Nuff said

Wow.. you are really lazy.. haha.. but here's a quick list:

200 OLL
75 RRA/Stag/DD LPK
25 BB
50 stock w/ buffer assembly
620 BCM/LMT upper w/ BCG & CH

Then get a rear sight of your choice and lots of mags and ammo..

gotime
04-28-2010, 9:27 PM
Ok maybe it was my fault for not being more clear or maybe the Subject line is misleading... This isn't me being lazy and if you think about it... this IS research. I have a budget of X. Some of you have built ARs for equal to or less than X. I'd like to draw on your experiences to see what would work for me. That's all. I thought that's what this place was for.

It's like if I asked for a recipe for a good match grade reload in 9mm. If you know of a recipe that's worked for you, why would you basically tell me to F off and go "do my own homework"??

I built mine for about $850.

$170 JD Machine lower + BB installed from a local shop in SD
$130 CTR stock + buffer assembly
$65 RRA LPK with a Hogue grip
$450 CMMG 14.5" chrome lined upper. CMMG makes great affordable uppers BTW. I'd check them out too. Properly staked keys, M4 feedramps, combat accuracy, ect...
$35 2x 10/30 PMAG

I searched around a lot and got some deals. Check bravo company, riflegear, ect... Don't jump into a buy unless you know exactly what you want.

Also you didn't mention what this rifle was for. That's pretty important. Especially when it comes down to which upper you'll want/need.

EDIT: I forgot to add my rear iron which is a MBUS so that brings the total to around $900. It's pretty important to have both front and rear sights!

I won't give you a build list for this reason: Once you get into it, you will become infected with BRD for which there is no known cure.
Soon after infection you'll find yourself doing many strange new things. Like taking a crap with the Midway Catalog, daydreaming about parts to order, reading twelve-page threads on ammo tests, pausing movies when an A2 or M4 are on screen, wondering what everybody bought before BCM came along, wondering why that guy at the range has his gun in a drag-bag, etc.

After the disease takes hold you'll realize it's better to just get one of everything rather than make these difficult choices.

An AR15 can come in MANY widely varying flavors. Knowing the purpose you intend to put the rifle to would help immensely. Saying you want an AR15 for $1,000 is little more than one step away from asking for suggestions on a "gun" for $1,000. Infinite variations. Help us, help you, by being more specific in uses for the AR. Mine is built for target use, and is quite ill-suited for a number of other things the AR platform could do well if configured differently.

- Phil
