View Full Version : Loose Barrel Nut... WTH

So I recently ordered a DD 12.0 FSP rail for my AR 15. When I was installing it I went to remove the original barrel nut/ delta ring assembly and it was loose. I didn't even need the barrel wrench to remove it.
How did this happen? Why would it have come loose? What could have happened if it came off?
I read something a while back that talked about how VFG's when twisted can loosen the barrel nut... is this what happened?
Thank you in advance

a VFG loosening the barrel nut? HUH?
it was loose to start with.
the gas tube would be damaged if you loosend the barrel nut with your vfg

Whoever built the upper did not tighten the nut the first time.

One thing to look forward to, now that your going to put that barrel nut on tight your groups will likely tighten up too.

A loose barrel nut is not necessarily unsafe.
It will cause poor grouping and eventually some funny wear on the gas tube though.
I have test fired MANY barrels by simply holding the barrel into the front of a reciever.
The only force there is against the barrel is from after the bolt carrier locks into the barrel.

I too think it was never properly tightened to begin with.
Some folks "make" up and AR upper and hand tighten the barrel nut and conveniently the gas tube port lines up and they stop...this is wrong...you need to go to the next port hole in the nut and that will make sure your upper stays tight and solid in the future.
