I picked up my Marlin 1895 Cowboy 45-70 rifle with 26" octagin barrel today. Went back to the office and shot at 25 yards with Remington 300 grain JHP ammo. My shots were touching each other with iron sights. The best part was that the rounds were hitting the bullseye where I aimed. Granted, it was only 25 yards, but the ballistics program shows that I can shoot from 0 - 100 yards point blank, because the rounds move within an inch of the line of sight to 100 yards when I sight it at 25 yards. I don't expect to shoot this rifle beyond 150 yards, although it is capable of far beyond 150 yards.

The recoil felt like shooting a 7mm Rem Mag or 300 WM. I am totally happy with his rifle. I have a Rossi 44 Mag lever rifle, but this Marlin takes it to a step above the 44 Mag.

I don't like shooting with a scoped rifle for hunting, because it is no fun anymore. I feel shooting the rifle with iron sights much more challenging, thus, more fun. Yes, I will shoot my tactical rifle with a scope. But, I will keep my hunting rifle just plain iron sights.

That's a loooooong barrel!

I have loved my lever 44Mag for more years than I care to count. If you love irons I suggest you take a look at the Lyman Tang2 rear sights. Great peep sight.

I heard about the sight. I will se how this sights do at a hunting trip soon. If I need to upgrade the sights, I will definitely look up those sights.

I kind of wanted a Browning High Wall in 45-70, but my friend would not sell it.:D

At least this one has a faster second shot and has a stronger action.

I didn't get a chance to shoot at a pig on this trip. I saw many on the way to my friend's ranch, but didn't see one to shoot. Maybe I will try next time.:)
