Ok, so I am trying to decide which way to go with uppers for my long(er) range build. I am considering RRA, DPMS, and Bushmaster uppers (24inch), but am also considering the AA 6.5 upper, and was wondering if any body could give me opinions of theirs.

The ones I am looking at are:
.223:

6.5mm:

http://alexanderarms.com/siteshopper.htm?cat=15&item=30

and a couple of other questions:
What is the difference b/w the DPMS A3 flattop and the Lo-Pro?
What is the difference in terms of ballistics and accuracy with the different 6.5 ammo shown on the AA website?

Thanks for all the help guys, and on a last note, no hijacking to talk about the pros and cons of barrel length :D (except for the 6.5 Grendel)

If it is your first upper I would stick with 5.56. The ammo is a lot cheaper and easily available.

If it isn't your first, then by all means go for the Grendel and you might want to do some reading on the Grendel website to help you make your decision: http://www.65grendel.com/
I have the 24" meant for long range; it comes into its own at 200 yards, but I haven't shot it past 300 yards yet. So far I found the 129 Hornady to be the most accurate factory ammo.

It is my DPMS 24" Stainless Steel Lo-Pro Upper, in the picture here. (A *real* scope will replace the EOTech soon....)

http://images16.fotki.com/v277/photos/2/26966/3274049/24inSS-vi.jpg

DPMS Lo-Pro = no forward assist, and no dust cover (I don't care much about the forward assist.... and.... i think it is OK without the dust cover.... for the price/deal!!!)

I think your best bet is to try to post a "WTB" and see if anyone is willing to sell you their DPMS 24" from the *insane* Midway deal last month. It cost'ed me only $330 for the upper+barrel assembly!!!!!!! [$359+shipping-$40(midway money refunded due to the non-chromed B/BC)] So, the rifle in the pic, not including the EOTech and the HarrisBipod.... cost'ed me only $590! ($120 lower + $60 LPK + $60 buttstock + $20 mag/fixkit + $330 upper/barrel).....

Thx for the pointer, but is there any reason other than cost of ammo and upper that you say I should use .223 to start with? And what ammo do you use (or do you reload)?

And as for first upper, I am still debating if I am going to do this or the 16" carbine first.

EDIT: you got in before my reply Ricko, damn you :p

I would have been a part of that buy, but funds were low because of my computer build. And thanks for the info about the lo-pro.

Do BOTH!! ;-)

That's what I have done. (mostly due to the insane DPMS deal)

Rifle 1: STAG15.... everything STAG.... Stag 1H upper(16" flat-top with detachable carryhandle), Stag lower, Stag LPK, Stag 6pos TacStock.... (EOTech & ARMS40 upgrade soon....) *fixed mag*

Rifle 2(almost there...): DPMS 24" SS bull, FF HG..... DoubleStar lower, Stag LPK(-grip), AceFX fixed stock (Leupold 4-12x scope upgrade....) *detachable mag*

Thx for the pointer, but is there any reason other than cost of ammo and upper that you say I should use .223 to start with? And what ammo do you use (or do you reload)?

Panz: I use Federal AE223, they were about the same $$.....IMO.....

I have 16" carbine in 5.56, then the Grendel in 24"; my logic was that the 5.56 would be better for short range and the Grendel for long range.
I don't re-load yet, but will start soon. Presently, for the Grendel I found the factory 129 Hornady to be most accurate, 123 Lapua second, 90 Speer third and 120 Nosler the least accurate.

and Ricko, I got two lowers for a reason :P one for the carbine, one for long range. that was my logic as well CG, but I wanted someone to convince me to go the less expensive path and stick with .223 for awhile on the long range (get going Ricko, thats your cue)

ted, what upper is that?
