So I am seeing some kvar barrel assemblies for the AK105. It has the barrel of 16" that you can get a brake to sleeve over it.

So anyone have one? I am guessing it uses the regular AK74 stuff yeah?

The actual AK 105 has a 12.5 inch barrel with the gas block/front sight combo in the same location as the longer barrel siblings. It uses a special muzzle brake/FS to make the gas system work reliably.

The 16in barrel version doesn't require the 102/104/105 brake because it's a full length standard barrel. You can cover the extra length of the barrel up with KVARs fake, slip over brake.

Although the threads on the FSB is 24mm, the only attachments that will work with the full 16in barrel is the muzzle nut, a fake sound suppressor, and the KVAR fake brake.

Since the gas system is in the same location as a regular AK 74 and AKM, all of the regular furniture and accessories will work with it. The 105 has a 4 or 5 hundred meter rear sight, and the cleaning rod is shorter.

LOL I should have just PMed you instead... Answers a lot of questions. It's just so darn hard to find a decent cheap 74 parts kit minus the barrel. All the ones I see are almost as much as what I can just buy from Atlantic Firearms. At least with them I can sell off the barrel from their kit or keep it for something later.

Setting aside the AKS folding stock for a minute.

There are three ways to build a 105. The first is to find a Bulgarian AK 74 parts kit with no barrel but matching numbers. Then build it up with your KVAR barrel. Be aware that those barrels from KVAR may not have the gas port drilled, or the handguard cut out, or the rear and front sights drilled or pinned on.

Second way is to buy a 5.45x39 Saiga. After all, an AK 105 is Russian. Convert it. Then press out the barrel pin and barrel, and rebuild it with your KVAR 105 barrel.

Third is to get a 5.45 Saiga, convert it, and look for an AK 102/104/105 gas block/front sight and replace the one on the Saiga. This is harder to do because those sights don't come up for sale very often.

I have been hunting for an AK 105 gas block for a pistol build, but when they come up, people are asking $250+ just for the gas block/FS.

I was first to say "I'll take it" for a 105 GB/FSB for $125 on the AKForums, but for some reason the seller couldn't wait 2 hours for me to reply with a confirmation and so it was sold out from under me. SO pissed.....

$250 is stupid to ask for when the complete 105 barrel is going for just a little more.

Krebs do a sight / gas block combo for their KTR range for $65.00, but the 0.786" barrel profile seems too large for our purposes? : http://www.krebscustom.com/PartsPages/KalashnikovParts.shtml

It's not the same. I'm a bit of a purist, don't ya know. :)

I was thinking about picking up a 104 barrel with the GB/FSB. I'd remove the GB/FSB and sell off the barrel or use it for another 7.62 AKM build.

Ahhh. That explains why I haven't seen a Tapco stock on any of your rifles. :p

Just out of interest, any idea what barrel would take a 0.786" gas block?

There was a thicker .223 barreled Saiga that was previously imported. Maybe for that one? Krebs does do conversions on Saigas. And I have one Tapco stock installed. I really like this AKM 63 clone in black. The Tapco is a close copy of the Hungarian wood stock. However, if I come accross the blue plastic Hungarian stock, it get's ditched.

You just missed this one.. Real Russian 105 FSB. I bid more than that once but someone wanted it more than me. Got to know the guy though, has all sorts of super rare class 3 stuff.:D

Actually, I saw that auction, but that gas black sold for the budget of my entire pistol build.

I'm looking for a 90 degree gas block /FSB to fit an 8" barrel, not for aesthetic reasons but because of a practical reason, ie. gas piston/ bolt carrier length vs gas port/ gas block position vs bolt carrier travel on a shorter barrel. The shorter the barrel the more problem solving is involved.

It can't be AZEX, they aren't in the AK building game any more. Keep us posted on the AK105 FSB/ GB, though.

I found him on gunbroker and we got to talking and he mentioned the AK105 fsb/gb. Oh yeah we were talking about my fake krink project and he told me to wait because he is actually making the AK105 combo. He has done business on gunbroker so looks legit.

Feel free to hit them up. Like I said, sometime in May he told me. It was going to be a limited run to check interest/

I'm also waiting for the Russian versions to be more available or an exact US version.

Dimensional also. From the info I gathered on the two.

Bulgarian 105 fsb is for akm barrel standard gas port. For example you can replace the one on a romanian barrel and everything will line up.

Russian has a different gas port angle and the barrel is tapered down 74 spec but unique.
