I'd guess this has probably been linked before, but I couldn't find it via a search.

Anyway, along with pretty much all of Massad Ayoob's books, it strikes me as a good read for any handgun owner who plans to use a weapon for self defense. I think it's really worthwhile to take the time to read the whole thing if you've never run across it before:

http://www.vpc.org/studies/uninthree.htm

The bottom line I pulled from the article is that merely owning and practicing with a weapon at a range isn't enough. Engaging in the right kind of scenario training, training regularly, and developing the correct mindset for self defense is crucial if you want to keep yourself, your loved ones, and by-standers safe.

So, what do you take from the VPC article putting forth the rationale for a handgun ban?

How does that article work for me when I didn't buy a gun for self defense?

Oh man, I didn't see that - and I 100% firmly disagree with it. No intentional trolling here.

I ran across the article I linked, and it cross referenced well with other reading I've done on firearm training/tactics. I genuinely thought it was a good read, and barring other opinions posted on that site, I still do.

I do agree with this also: Know thy enemy.

How does that article work for me when I didn't buy a gun for self defense?

One assumes that it doesn't if you never plan to use your firearm to defend your life.

Edit: Holy crap! The rest of that site is flat out ridiculous =/. No wonder this post generated some hostility. I'm so sorry!

Welcome and guess you learned something :) Don't feel too bad. That site is designed intentionally to dupe "responsible" gun owners.

You linked me to an article with the title of: "Pro-Handgun Experts Prove That Handguns Are a Dangerous Choice for Self-Defense." Are you sure you're not one of them?

That website is a somewhat cleverly thought out anti-gun site. Every other sentence jumps out as "a gun banner wrote it" to those of us who have been around. I guess I'm going to give the OP the benefit of the doubt and assume he's an unsuspecting newbie.

"self defense" is about the least of a myriad of reasons for why I own a handgun.

I can hit what I aim at.. at all sorts of distances with all sorts of handguns.. I learned all this not because I was anticipating the hordes of bad guys most of you seem to know you will have to deal with every week, but because I enjoyed plinking and reloading and hunting and shooting cans and varmits.

I am quite familiar with my handguns and can operate them well. I am quite sure that my mindset in a desperate situation would not be any worse than any of you gunslingers who have never been in a real fight.

The morbid BS that is so prevalent on most boards from guys who have never shot more than a couple of guns for a very few years is just the ammunition the gun grabbers need to start the bans.. the "gunslinger" tough talk we hear so much.

And why not? If you all act like only a person who competes in fake gun fight sports or goes to some para military self defense class for a week.. if you say that is the only person who can use a gun properly..

Well.. the gun grabbers will love that crap.

nope.. steely eyes and mad gunfiter skilzzzz are not what handguns are all about for the vast majority of us.
