View Full Version : Day at the range with Lead free 30-06

So today was my first time shooting lead free out of my 30-06. Its a Win Model 70. I bought 4 boxes to try out. Win E-tip in 150 and 180 grain, and Federal/Barnes TSX in 165 and 180 grain. I was shooting 100yds to start and got the best group with the TSX 180gr, About 1-1/4" group. I was pretty happy with that so I moved to 200yds and tried the TSX 180's and they were all over the place! Here is a few pics of my targets.
Didnt have time to shoot the others at 200yds cuz I had to leave but it is driving me nuts. Gonna go back to the range and shoot the others at 200yds and see what happens.
I dont think it is a problem with my shooting cuz I dont have this problem with lead ammo. I can shoot pretty reliably out to 500yds with this gun.

Win E-tip 150gr 100yd 5 shots

Win E-tip 180gr 100yd 5 shots

TSX 165gr 100yd 5 shots

TSX 180gr 100yd 5 shots

Then here is the target from 200yds with the TSX 180gr
The first is low right then the 2nd and 3rd are way low and left

You think by the time I moved out to 200yds, the barrel was copper fouled? I had put 20rds through it by then....

I doubt copper fouling, but who knows. I have been using both the Win and Fed, same weights as you, for about 3 years now in a Savage 110 and I'm not getting anything like that. Normal dispersion (MOA increase) at 200 and 300 over the 100 yard groups, but nothing weird.

Hope you can figure it all out. My entry/exit wounds, wound channels and just general effect on pigs have all been totally satisfactory with both brands of lead free. Still need to find out if they really are "condor safe" though. :)

I just picked up 2 boxes of the Winchester E-Tip on recommendation of my
gun dealer (BAGV). I haven't tried them yet (going next weekend).

I'm going to be running them through a Model 70 as well.

Have you tried the e-tips? Any problems or comments?

Doh! Just say the comments between the pics. Still, I'd like to here your opinion on the e-tips before I shoot them
