I am a newbie to Service Rifle. Do any of the Southern Calif Gun Clubs have monthly service rifle matches? Are they full course or short course?

Thanks for any information....it's been 25 yrs since I shoot long distance rifle and I still love it.

Those of us in the conservative zone of the Republic of Kalifornia have several ranges. Dulzura, in San Diego, Seeley in the Imperial Valley, Santa Margarita at Camp Pendleton. There are atleast three in the LA area. San Gabriel off the 210 at the 605 will probably close in a year. The city is running them off. Most of these places will offer 2-3-600 yd cross the course matches using NRA rules. Seely has long range out to 800 yds. Yuma offers out to 1000yds. We are in need of shooters to come out and try your luck. Don't even think that you are not good enough. We will all help you, and we were all where you are right now. Unless your in jail

Thanks for the info and the links....no, not in jail, yet....but who knows with the DOJ and off list lowers.

I contacted the San Gabriel Valley Gun Club. They have a high power match on the 2nd Sat of every month. I plan on attending the next one in March. They only shoot 200-300 and then reduced targets for 600.

Again, thanks for the info.

Dulzura Range?

I visit the area nearby a few times a year. What range is in Dulzura? Private?
Ranges? Website?
Any info would be helpful.
Thanks

It sounds like San Gabriel is a good range, you've got %75 of the course covered. The wind can start to play into things even if you shoot the reduced 600 yard targets at 300 yards. This is good because you start to learn to pay attention to the wind while not quite getting slapped around (potentially).

I am just hoping I get through the match without any "Major" mistakes.

Started practicing against the clock for the rapid fire....not bad for a grandpa, but lots of room for improvement.

Everyone I have approached about Service Rifle has been extremely helpful and more than willing to lend a hand or a glove or a mat...seems like a great bunch of guys, of course, none of them know me yet.

Again, thanks for the help and the encouragement. They mean a lot to a beginner like me.

Finished my first service rifle match on Saturday at the San Gabriel Valley Gun Club. We shot at 200 and 300 yards and then a reduced 600 yd target at 300 yards for prone slow fire.

Weather was kinda iffy, but the show must go on....we setup in the rain, decided to wait till 8:30 to decide if it was a go/no go, ran with 2 relays of shooters, call it off because of rain, call it on because the rain stopped, and just had an all round good time.

This is a great group of guys that went out of their way to help a newbie and make me feel comfortable. They helped me with pit procedures, offered me equipment to use, were more than helpful with free information and helpful hints. They all have a very "sharp" sense of humor since they have been shooting together for a while, but at no time did I feel like an Outsider.

I got through without shooting anything other than my target and only made one mistake on scoring so I think I did OK. My score leaves a lot of room for improvement, but I don't think that will be a problem, because I think I am hooked on this activity.

Thanks for all the support to a newbie.

Shot up there for about 5 years. Got to know them all. Try to come to Camp Pendleton if you can. You will see all the same people mostly. Of course the range is run a little different. You have to be a little faster getting your stuff on and off the line. Hope you make it.

Some Angeles range info for the OP and anyone else that might want to give service rifle competition a try:

Matches at the Angeles Range in Little Tijunga Canyon

http://www.angelesranges.com/matches.htm

1st Saturday: LARC (haven't shot w/ them)

Alternate 3rd Satruday: JPL Gun Club (my club). Informal, very friendly to beginners, we will supply a rifle (M1) and ammo if a person doesn't have one. Match Fee ($5), Annual Membership ($10), Ammo, if you need it ($15). We also are planning to allow fixed-mag ARs with modified rapid-fire rules. Next match is in May.

3rd Sunday: Golden Bears. A group of very serious shooters, but friendly, helpful people. I always learn something from them. If you've never done a match, you might want to come to a JPL GC match first to get the procedures down, since we are more beginner oriented.
