You are going to have a blast. I was at the range with mine yesterday. Post a picture when you pick it up.... If you don't want to shoot corrosive ammo this is what I use...

Congrats, pick up a spam can of surplus ammo while you are at it. The only reason I wouldn't shoot surplus is if my range wouldn't let me. Yeah it is corrosive but that is easy to clean.

I bought some Yugo surplus ammo cause of a post I found here. I don't mind cleaning the gun thoroughly after every time I shoot it. At least I don't mind yet. Is the silver bear ammo magnetic/steel core?

I bought the Yugo ammo cause it clearly stated it wasn't steel core. I'm in Southern California so wild fires are a pretty big concern with Summer coming up.

PS
Any last minute tips on nooks and crannies people sometimes miss when cleaning off cosmoline?

I have heard of people taking a rag or something and attaching it to their drill so they can wipe down the chamber of the mosin. Most mosins have the problem when they have a long range session, the bolt gets sticky, this can help with that problem sometimes.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean it won't attract a magnet or spark. The casing may have steel in it.

It's copper jacketed lead core so I hope I'm safe with summer right around the corner. It'd suck not to be able to shoot my mosin for awhile.

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=A76254Y&groupid=40

Would the bear ammo be safe to shoot if the Yugo surplus isn't?

Fate

Yugo surplus 7.62x54r is non-magnetic. It's the only surplus that is. Corrosive, but ok to shoot at So Cal ranges.

Bolt lug recesses. They're very difficult to get fully clean. I bought a set of three hard plastic dental picks in the Walmart gun section and they work great for tough to reach places.
Have fun with your new 91/30!

If your lazy like....ME.

I used a steam cleaner to blast all the cosmoline off, it took about 2 hours to break it down, clean all the cosmos off, lube and oil it up..

THE only complaint i have is ITS SO ADDICTIVE TO SHOOT.

Tacom
04-17-2010, 11:41 AM
I don't have a steam cleaner, but I do have a clothing iron that can shoot little puffs of steam haha.

If you guys haven't noticed, I'm pretty much just sitting around waiting till the time comes.

Their customer service is pretty good. They're not pushy or dismissive. It feels like one of those shops you can just go in for a nice chat if you felt like it. When I went in to buy my mosin they told me they were closing in 20 mins but didn't rush me.

You also forgot the Arisaka Type 99, the M-1 Carbine, the K-43 and the 91/30 sniper, the SVT-40, the M-38 and M-44 carbines, and remember there are 2 main types of enfields the #1 Mk3 and the #4 Mk1, and the list goes on and on and on LOL. out of those I just listed I dont own a K-43, but got all the others, and it has taken me years. I just sold one of the M-28/76 Mosins on gunbroker for a decent little profit, gonna put that money back into my gun fund LOL. Always trying to enhance my collection.:)

Congrats and post pics once you get it home

Just got home with it. How do you guys get the serials and markings to show up better on camera other than getting a nicer camera. My Dare phone camera is not up to snuff. I've seen some pictures where it looks like someone traced over them with liquid white out. Is it really just liquid white out?

Blurry but looks good!
Try pressing the button with sort of a flower picture on it. I think that helps with close ups. On my camera, If I hold the shutter button halfway down it will focus. You can also wipe a little chalk into the stampings to make them stand out.

What year and arsenal?

I got mine a few weeks ago, got it cleaned and as of late have been shooting the daylights out of it, as someone said earlier, it is VERY ADDICTING!!!

My brother had his remington 770 .30-06 out there too when i was shooting, we had the 2 loudest guns in the local area ;)

So I am sitting here doing homework and thinking about what should I save for next (poor college student). So who's got suggestions about the next most affordable C&R with readily available ammo?
Already on my mind is an old Mauser or vz24.

I was thinking about putting a new stock, muzzle brake, modifying the bolt, and putting a scope on mine. Since it's a 100 dollar gun I'm not to worried about keeping it original.

Make sure the rear sight is as far back as it will go. I've accidently had it set for 300 and was shooting 100. Couldn't figure out why it was so high. haha

Well...there are still a dozen Mosin variants you don't have. M44, M38, Dragoon, SCW, M91, 91/59, and six kinds of Finn's.

Nothing like spending $400 on a gun to get $100 results. Keep it original.

What type of ammo were you shooting? From what I understand, most of the mosins were supposedly sighted with light ball?

I have 2 91/30's and a 91/59

One of my 91 30's will only shoot light ball accurately, anything else is pretty much high. The other one is dead on, but its an ex sniper so who knows, and the 91/59 shoots everything high.

QFT.

If this were a rare model and not many left in the world I could agree. It is a Mosin Nagant, bought for the sport of shooting, not collecting. The only problem with buying things for it is that some of the accessories will not enhance the experience. Many of the after market products for the Mosin is junk. The clamp on compensator's, the scope mount that replaces the rear site and some of the stocks you can buy really are someone's idea of making money on junk. I fell into this trap many years ago with my first Mosin Nagant. If I were a newbie to the Mosin and wanted to know what works and what doesn't, I would start a thread and ask folks that have used after market products on their Mosin.

Exactly. I just want it to shoot accurately. With the stock the way it is I couldn't get a cheek weld if my life depended on it.

I picked up my first Mosin (1933 Izzy hex 91/30) this Friday and shot it twice over the weekend. Even after 100 rounds I wanted more. These rifles are a lot of fun! My Mosin is definitely more accurate than I can shoot it with iron sights... so I think putting a repro PE-M/PU scope on it would enable me to reach out much further downrange, it's just the cost that is a problem... you might as well have bought a 91/30 sniper for ~$400 I think.

...as a fellow poor college student, I'd vote to save up for that Mauser!! The k98's the next thing on my list.. I'll maybe worry about turning one of my milsurps into a sniper after I have a few rifles to choose from. Or you could just spend your money on ammo, which I've just done, and have only oatmeal to eat for the next few weeks. Have fun with that new Mosin, I love mine already, I'm sure you will too!
