NOPE, the ar's and ak's both don't allow .22 variants. all others i believe are ok.

Yes. A dedicated .22LR would be legal... read this thread:

.22LR AK's are California legal as well, we have four Romainian .22LR AK Trainers on the way to the shop as I type this.

so I need to find a lower and a barrel that are stamped 22lr... I would much rather have a 17HMR

First off: no, you don't have to do anything different with your lower.

Second: you'll need to buy a 22LR upper. DPMS makes one which comes with barrels for both 22LR and 17HMR (2, I think)

Personally, though, I like the V-22 upper. They're $260, and are pretty much impossible to remove by hand (thus it's really hard for folks to claim that your AR is a quick change away from a fully un-neutered AR).

So you are saying I can build an evil stag lower as long as i put this upper on it

Absolutely correct. 22LR status and 10rd mags means you aren't evil at all with that on an AR. However, if I were you I'd print out the AW part of the CPC and highlight 'rimfire', and bring it to the range for the uninformed...

I understand that .22lr is considered legal, but does that go for 9mm conversions also?
