I have seen a few pics on arf.com with nice looking rifles with shorty 10.5 inch barrels. I almost want to say these sdf rifles are "cute". I see there are references that barrel length must be 16" (14.5 + perm. flash/muzzle break) so I was wondering if these are legal here in california?

I believe it's legal only if you permanently attach something to it to make it overall 16".

Yeah, i figured that. Kinda defeats the purpose (if there really is one) of getting a short barreled AR. Thanks for the reply.

check out model 1 sales. They have a kit called the XM style. It is a commando type gun, and has a 11.5 inch barrel, with a welded 5.5 inch hider to make it legal. Yes it is a legal 17" barreled gun, but technicaly it's a 11.5 inch gun.

10.5" barrel sucks for the 5.56 anyways.

People who get paid to carry them complain about poor ballistics. Hell 14.5" is too short for that matter.

I plan on building a california AR with the XM 11.5 upper with a welded hider on it. I like the look and I dont need accuracy right off hand. I just plink out in the desert at ranges of 100 meters and closer, also I just want a nice small gun to go trompin around the desert with!

Really, if by law you can't have anything shorter than a 16 inch barrel, why for G's sake get a 10.5 barrel and a 5.5 muzzle brake????

A 5.56 out of a 10.5 barrel is like shooting a heavy 22 LR. Ballistics SUCK BIG TIME. Might as well get a 16 inch barrel and get the full benefits of a 5.56 bullet.

What is the company that makes XM 11.5 uppers? I could not google XM 11.5 upper and come back with good results.

Thanks,

the barrel is an 11.5 inch with a WELDED 5.5 flash hider which makes it a legal 17" barrel. The kit i'm looking into is made by model1sales.com the barrel they use is made by E.R. Shaw. It is called the XM177 style rifle kit, just look under kits and you will see it.

right...

11.5" barrel + 4.5" welded hider = 16" barrel -- or so what the politicians did when they wrote up that law...

16" barrel + upper assembly + lower + stock > 30" overall length of rifle.

anything else well... there are 58 DAs that blah, blah, blah....

For that model1sales.com site, does anyone know who makes the rest of the parts besides the barrel?

If you really like the look of the XM barrel, then go for it, as long as you understand what you are giving up in bullet performance. If you want to be able to remove the flash hider to change front sights or add a free float rail, you will need a 16 in barrel min. I decided to build an M4 clone, so I ordered a bushmaster upper with a 14.5 in barrel and a perm. attached "izzy" brake.

I think I decided against getting the XM upper. I am going to go with the model 1 sales 16" car standard kit. Like you guys said it's accurate and you can change things on it. I will order it with a A1 hider (cause I think the A2 is retarded with no lower flash cutouts) and I'm thinking about changing it out with one called the phantom, i'm not sure of the maker.

I know it's kinda off the XM subject, but is a M4 profile barrel more accurate than a standard 16" heavy barrel?

No... especially under sustained fire.
