View Full Version : Flash hiders -- real benefits?

I haven't had a chance to compare a given rifle with a given load, with and without a flash hider.

How much do they really do, say, on a 5.56?

I get a lot of muzzle flash from milsurp in my Mini-14, but not much at all from some .223 rounds. It doesn't matter in daylight, but in low-light situations I can really see the 5.56 fireball. But how much would a flash suppressor change that?

Anyone done a straight-up comparison?

(Yes I understand that I can't legally add a flash suppressor to the Mini, but I'm building a CA-legal .223 with a fixed magazine and I'm looking at barrel options.)

Am I looking at that correctly if I conclude that USGI flash hiders don't do a whole lot, but there are designs out there that are quite effective?

It can be a bit misleading b/c most of the tests involve short barreled 11.5" guns, which have a lot more flash than 16 or 20" guns. The difference between flash suppressors narrows considerably when going to 16" and longer guns, though the Vortex and Phantom will always perform better.

Another reason for the Vortex or phantom is that they are longer than the A2 and will make a 14.5" barrel legal when perm attached while an A2 perm attached will still be below 16" minimum length.

I replaced the A1 flash hider on my CA-Legal AR w/ a YHM Phantom 28-5C2 flash hider. I benefited by having a sealed off bottom to lessen dust "kick-up" in the prone position and a more aggressive look.
