View Full Version : CA Legal AR Possibility

After looking at some pics from the Shotshow I saw that someone is making a folding stock for an AR-10 variant. It reminded me of the great debate we had on the old board about constructing an AR receiver that had a traditional style stock. If I remember correctly the two problems that we could not overcome was what to do with the buffer tube, and how to sufficiently make it not an AR. For those of you with more gunsmithing knowledge than I have, could this folding stock AR design allow a truly CA legal AR to be designed.

Those are ZM ARs: http://www.yhm.net/store/lr.html

You need to have a gas-operated upper to use a folding stock.

ZM offers them, so does Olympic and P.O.F., maybe even DSA(not sure on that one).

There's also HK and Colt, but they are LEO/Military only or still in prototype stages. Also the Shirke people offer a gas-op conversion kit, I've heard that it takes forever or never to get stuff from them.

One drawback about Gas-Operated uppers is supposed inferior accuracy compared to Stoner's direct gas impingement design and that most rail mounts won't clear the extra parts. Although the LR rifles don't seem to have the rail-deficiency issue.:D

A CA Legal Alternative is already in the works, it has no Pistol Grip and a Std Monte Carlo type of stock. I built a Proto-Type that will hopefully be on the Market sometime soon. It uses Std AR Uppers Too!:) I will post an updated picture to Tease everyone a little more:p It will be a little more Tactical looking with a Shorter Stock and M4 Railed Upper, I just finished making a Muzzle Brake for the Upper so I can put it on the CA Lower. Hope it will be ready tonight.

Ace stocks has an interesting bullpup stock for the AR platform in the works.

I was impressed with it (although not legal for you guys) and marvelled at how it takes a standard upper and lower. If something like that is possible, anything is possible.

Glad to see mud picked up the ball and ran with it...hope something cool turns out for you guys!

I Hope Soon! Trying to come up with final design and pricing. Hope to have a plastic version of the Final Receiver design to check the trigger and action function. Then hopefully the Final Aluminum product will be tested!:) I will try this Shorty version in a 3-gun in April, hope all goes well.

Holy Crap! Outstanding! This surely will be a hit. There will be a group buy for us Calguns members right?:) The ability to swapping uppers is key. Good work sir.

Me likey, and for some strange non-tactical reason, me likey the first version even more.

Somehow the Monte Carlo stock seems more "sporterish". Makes it a stealth EBR.:D

hey Mud, I dont know if this has been brought up, but any chance of a .308 version of your rifle?

Mud

I would love to make a .308 version that takes my M1A mags, but the cost of the .308 Upper and trying to find a 0% forging has made it a back burner project. If anyone wants to donate an AR 10 Upper I'll start as soon as this Project is finalized!:D

He is a really cool guy and if you let him know what you are doing I bet that he would go half or maybe even donate... but dont mark me on that. I have bought some stuff from him before, and he is really good to the home machinist/gunsmith crowd.

I don't think William actually carries Ar-10 0% Forgings, it's been awhile since I ordered from him though. I need a 0% Forging to start the Project, but the cost of the Uppers is the limiting factor. Little too costly at this time. Like I said though, it's a possibility.
