View Full Version : Just got back from my Hog Hunt!

Just got back from my Hog Hunt with Prospector. Countless miles in the truck, 9 hours of glassing the ridges, but it paid off... HOG DOWN!! We both bagged nice pigs. I've got all the meat wrapped and in the freezer. Detailed report of the hunt to follow... :cool2:

This hunt was on private land in Kern Co (finally got to try out my Winchester Supreme Lead Free 150gr 30.06 rounds). The first day we went out at 6am. Drove all over the ranch in the morning but didn't see any pigs. Saw a lot of Elk (bulls and cows), coyotes, and tons of rabbits & squirrels. Spent about 8 hours then finally just before sunset saw a group of pigs way out on another hill. It was about 30min until sunset and would have taken 1-2 hours to get over there, so we decided to call it quits for the day.

Next morning we left at 5:45am and it was misty and foggy outside. Couldn't see more than 20 yds out. Sat in the car and waited for about 1 hour. Conditions were still bad up at the high elevation, so we hiked down the side of the hill. As we got below the low cloud line, we spotted a group of pigs feeding on the adjacent hillside. We both setup for the shot (about 100-120 yds away) up on the ridge and bagged nice meat pigs. The group consisted of about 6-7 adult pigs with 4-5 piglets.

Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time left to do some varmint and coyote hunting.

Shot taken from the top of the ridge:

Nice pig! Just the right size. I've found that 90-140lbs are the best for the table. I avoid the bigger "good for sausage only" pigs, and I've never hunted any animal for "trophies" (like tusks). What did your beast weigh?

Nice pig you got there.

Nice pigs. Congrats to both of you. Nice hunting rifle. I use a Remington 700 CDL in .30-06 too. Great, Accurate, Light Weight.
Where did you bag those fine looking pigs?
Would love to join you on your next outing. Finally, who is your butcher?
