I'm looking for a good target upper for a complete Lauer lower. I've got a budget of $1000. Goal: hit a prairie dog at 200 yards.
Thanks for your advice.

I recieved this last week

This last weekend I had no problem exploding ground squirrels @ 400+ yards with handloaded 40 gr V-MAX w/28g benchmark and 6-18x40 AO Leupold glass. I have purchased numerous items from this seller and have had nothing but good expierences.

BTW: You will save $250 on this upper using "buy it now"

200 Yards is not that far of a distance in the world of varmiting. If that is what you anticipate shooting, you should have a lot of options available, especially given your budget.

JT Distribution sells a 24" match upper for $635 including the bolt, bolt carrier and charging handle. This has a fluted SS 24" barrel with your choice of twist rates and a Badger handguard (great for shooting off of a rest).

Or, JT also sells their varmint upper for $435 including b/bc/ch. This is a SS, non-fluted barrel in 16", 20" or 24" with free-float aluminum handguards.

JT has a very good reputation, both for the quality of their components and their service.

With the budget you have, you should be able to find essentially any upper, such as one of those above or one from RRA or DPMS. All will be capable of 1/2"-1" groups all day long at 100 yards. It really comes down to your preference. If you can't hit the PD, don't blame the gun!!:D

That's a good price on the DPMS!

Just about any scoped upper will do that. My M&A Parts 20" bull barreled upper is set up with the "0" at 250 yards and -3.5" at 300 yards for ground squirrels, (half the size of prairie dogs).

Any good squirrel huntin' near Bakersfield? I've been going to Carissa plains these last few weekends and it's pretty hit and miss. BTW I live in Shafter.

I fixed fence and cattle pens all last Sunday for a rancher and will be branding cattle this weekend. He lets me shoot all year for the help.

That's the way to do it.

Swift -

Check out the thread just below yours from Ironballs on a DPMS package that is on special from Midway:

quote:
{ a 24" SS bull bbl, freefloat with bolt and carrier
Retail $579

this month only at midway it is $359.99}

Looks like it is still being offered, although you will have a short wait due to backorder since it is so popular.

I got the 24" Match-15 kit from J&T Distributing which includes the upper mentioned above by Overkill, plus the 2-stage NM trigger and Ergo Target deluxe grip. I added the Magpul precision rifle stock also. If you keep the standard A2 stock the kit comes with, it comes in under $1000. I actually just finished putting it together the other night. Now it's on to paint...

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll be ordering the match upper recommended by Overkill and soopafly.
