I just read an article about hunting feral pigs in San Diego county and I have a few questions. I have my Certificate of Completion for Hunter Education Training Program from 1998/99. What do I need to get to be setup to hunt for Pigs? I have not gone hunting since I went to AK for caribou right after I got my Hunting License.
And would a 30-06 rifle work on a pig? Any gone hunting for pig in the North County area???

Thanks,
Al

I also use a Rem 700 in 30-.06. I also prefer to carry a side arm (or at least a pig sticker) just in case you have one rush you. But that doesn't happen very often. Other than that, I just carry a small day pack to hold my compass/GPS, gloves, map, water, snacks, and my field dressing knives. And definitely have a decent set of binoculars.....your eyes can cover ground a lot faster than your feet.

Glad to hear that I am good to go on the choice of caliber.
So do I need to buy a current 2009/2010 hunting license and then buy a Wild Pig (resident) tag?
Anyone on here have a "Lifetime Hunting License"? I hear you get 5 wild pig tags a year for the rest of your life...

Yes you buy the license first so you can put your # on it. Dont know about 5 pig tags with a lifetime. That would sure pay for it self after 7 years.

Yeah, you just need to take your old license in with you to Big 5, or wherever you buy your license. Buy a new license ($41) and a pig tag ($19), and lead-free ammo (if you are hunting within condor zone). Get a regs book (free), or look at the DFG website for the Condor Zone information.

As far as the 5 pig tags a year....I have no idea. I don't have a lifetime license.

Maybe. It is just proof that it is more than enough caliber.

professionalcoyotehunter - how much did that pig weigh and at what range did you take it? What type & grain of bullet did you use for it?
I've got a SigArms SHR970 rifle in '06 with a Leupold 3X9 variable scope. I have some 150 and 180 grain softpoint ammo for it.

We would guess that this one weighed in between 300-350 easily. First shot was around 100 yards last shot at 250 yards and running. I used 180 grain Core Lokt Remington SP.

There is pig at Tejon Ranch but it is private and very costly. There are lots of guided and semi-guided hunts on the central coast and if you're desperate you can go to Big Horn Canyon Ranch and pay $350 for a hog but it's a canned hunt.

Thanks, mega bad day with work and jackass neighbors. Living away from home and my wife sux balls.

My only reservation would be for $761 would I live here for the 19 years to break even. Sometimes I discuss with my wife how long it will be before we bail on the state.

I don't currently hunt pigs (no leases) and I pour my $ into waterfowl and when I can afford it Elk hunts.

no pigs in SD County El Capitan Indians have some on their res STAY AWAY from the res. In a few years they ought to populate some public lands, nothing huntable now, wait a few years to hunt here.

I don't remember exactly, I think it was around 1500-1800 dollars for both the bird and big game license. Every year they send me my license, upland stamp, CA Duck Stamp, Deer Tag and 5 Pig Tags. If you have kids under age 10 it's a hell of a buy for them.
