I just recieved a barrel for AR series rifle. The only marking is down by the chamber area on the barrel. It says only "M4".

Is this a military barrel? What chamber is it then, 5.56? Should I only use which ammo then, 5.56 or is .223 ok?

I am new to this, thanks for you patience and time.

Most likely not military. Colt would be marked C MP 5.56 with a twist rate. FN would probably have something identifying it as FN. FN barrel isn't commercial and would have to either be a reject (scrap) or stolen government property... Either 5.56 nato spec or .223 would work just fine. The 5.56 chamber is a little larger, but handles the .223 just fine. Technically they're slightly different spec, but for all realistic purposes they're interchangable... just like 7.62x51 and .308 Win.
