To be continued.

Seems they have passed a revised version, on first reading. Taking out the ammunition dealer wording and just keeping firearm vendors. I haven't read the revised ordinance yet. More to come.

Are you sure this pertains to the new legislation afoot in Emeryville re gun dealers?

Whether or not the people speaking in favor or against this measure, I'm looking to what Mr. Gura said to Justice Breyer:

JUSTICE BREYER: To be specific, suppose Chicago says, look, by banning handguns not in the hills, not hunting, nothing like that, nothing outside the city, in the city, we save several hundred human lives every year. And the other side says, we don't think it is several hundred and, moreover, that doesn't matter. How do you decide the case?

MR. GURA: We decide that by looking, not to which side has the better statistics, but rather to what the framers said in the Constitution, because that policy choice was made for us in the Constitution.

Erik.

WTF. They just don't get it. This state is so corrupt from the bottom to the top. There is no common sense, no intellect, no integrity. These people are just liars! It's truly disgusting to see these developments as they happen...

It can almost be understood how some of these restrictive gun laws were passed. The media did NOT cover them, there was no internet (mostly) and these decisions were made basically in secret, with no outside influence. But it is inexcusable today for people to show up at these meetings with no idea what is going on. In this age of instant information, fact checking can be done in seconds, lies can be refuted. Why do we still have these moron politicians in office! The public can know everything that a candidate has ever voted on, their opinions and views, how corrupt they are, and yet they still get elected!

Boy that was fun. We should do it again sometime.

Some of the locals that were in favor of the ordinance were openly hostile, likely stirred up by Mr. Donahue's (full of ****) blog.

There weren't very many CGN'ers. My guess is 15-20 at most, and ~half a dozen NRA people. Suffice it to say I am VERY, VERY disappointed in the turnout.

As you can tell from my previous posts in the other thread I wasn't surprised in the least that they shortened our time to one minute (speaker cards indicated that speakers get 5 minutes).

Despite all the sad faces in this thread - I think that it went well. It was a partial win against an emotional and motivated opposition.

We used logic. They used emotion.

The Council was aware that we were coming. They knew that we were serious and they were polite enough to listen.

In the end, they had a redlined version of the measure ready for us, which they voted on.

The LCAV folks learned that this ain't the '90s no more.

They learned that if they're gonna insist that we sit in the back of the bus, we're gonna start hollerin'.

I'll start another thread with an AAR so the folks that were there can give their impressions.

I was given an unfriendly finger by at least two antis, and was in the group outside the chamber that was confronted directly by BD. The Police Chief came over and sternly advised us to pipe up. We then proceeded to ignore BD until he got bored of looking over JD's shoulder and left.

I was one of the first people outside after the vote, and was confronted by a older man in bicycle gear and a bright yellow jacket, who said he had served in the Swedish army, and that if we wanted guns we should go to Afghanistan. I told him that I had been to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, and I'd rather be there without a gun than in Oakland without a gun. At least in Bagram we had a secure perimeter with heavily armed Security Forces, but in Oakland I'm on my own. He said that having a gun is childish, so I told him we'd have to agree to disagree. He scoffed and walked away.

A couple minutes later Berto and I were approached by a young couple who asked us where we were from. We told him, and he said thanks. Berto asked why he wanted to know, and he said something to the effect of: "I was just wondering where you people are coming from and why you're getting involved in Emeryville issues." We tried to explain it to him, but he obviously didn't want to hear it since he walked away towards the Swede, giving us the finger (for no apparent reason).

Farid and I had a interesting conversation with a lady outside, who admitted to owning a rifle, but was against what she called "proliferation". She was surprised when we told her that we didn't work for anybody, and that even though many of us are NRA members, nobody was there in any official capacity. I hope Farid gets to take her to the range, she actually seemed interested in going. She tried to raise her voice a few times, I'm not sure what her goal with that was, but we were able to keep cool and speak to her logically and respectfully. JD must have walked by us during an early point in the conversation.

I was somewhat surprised that the antis managed to muster up their troops, but as others have posted I think most of it is due to BD's inflammatory rhetoric. Let's let his influence die: I will remove any place I posted his full name, please consider doing the same. We don't need Calguns to be the first result when his name is Googled.

Well said. I think most of us were quite frankly, amazed at the amount of hostility there. Interestingly, 1/2 of Emeryville's City Council lives outside of Emeryville. Their Mayor, City Attorney, City Council, and Chief of Police are white. All of the people, to a PERSON, who spoke FOR this measure were white. All of this, despite the fact that Emeryville is 60 percent NON-white.

Unlike the anti-gunners (who by their "coded" words, were clearly afraid of "those people" coming in from Oakland), we were a quite diverse and well-spoken group.

I'm not one to bring race into an issue, when race is not part of the issue - but here IT CLEARLY WAS. One comment was quite telling - one woman said something to the effect that gun shops should not be located in "urban areas." Urban areas is a "polite" codename for black areas.

I really wish that one of those anti-gunners would just come out and say "we are afraid of black people from Oakland coming in to our town and buying guns." Since that's what they were "trying" to say, behind all the PC niceness.

Those BMW hippies make me sick.

We really needed more people from our side over there. They had enough people to make it about 50/50 but with our established community here we should have had out nubered the opposition by far. Regardless, I think they already had their minds made up but were doing what they had to. They met with their lawyer prior to the meeting and then conveniently went with a revised version in which they already had 20 copies printed out. Looks like he must be a fan of Adolph's famous quips.
