Can anyone tell me whether or not it is possible to convert a G17 to G34 by simply changing out the slide/ barrel assembly? That is, is the the G17 and G34 frames identical? Can the G34 slide/ barrel assembly be purchased separately? If so where can I purchase them?

Thank you for your help!

Tony.

Yup. I've swapped uppers on different frames before, it's no problem.

May be simpler and cheaper to sell your 17 and buy the 34. That being said, you could try glockstore.com.

Why would you hand the state 25$ for DROS, wait 10 days and have to buy a new lock? Buy a new upper and have it shipped to your house and your done.

The 17, 17L, 22, 24, 31, 34, 35, and 37 all use the same frame and slides will swap in and out of either with no modification to either the frame or slide.

Some important notes:

1. Using a non-9mm slide assembly on a 2 pin frame is dangerous. The second pin was added to address stress fractures and frame failures with the higher pressure cartridges.

2. Locking blocks have changed over the years between production runs, calibers, generations, etc. If you are planning of swapping, confirm BEFORE firing that you have a correct locking block in the frame.

3. Ejectors MAY need to be changed. Some are backwards compatible with other cartridges and some are not. If you swap and are having ejection or stovepiping issues, it's a good bet to check the ejector.

4. Barrels, in very specific circumstances (such as using a 17L barrel in a 17), can be swapped between slides. For the sake of keeping things simple, let's just use the inaccurate yet good rule of thumb that barrels should not be mixed with slides of a different models. Easiest example to explain is that the .40 barrels are larger than 9mm barrels. A .40 barrel won't fit in a 9mm slide but a 9mm slide will fit sloppy in a .40 slide - at the very best hurting accuracy and at the worst being potentially dangerous. You also can't always change between models within the same caliber as a 17L barrel will fit into a 17 slide and function, but a 17 barrel won't fit in a 19 slide and function. That's why there are conversion barrels; they address the issue specific to that model to convert to a different caliber - such as a 9mm barrel profiled to the external dimensions of a .40 barrel to function properly in a .40 frame and slide when a 9mm magazine is used.

Don't forget the bbl. Unless you plan on using a 17 bbl in a 34 slide. You would probably be $350 or so plus tax and shipping. Selling your 17 and buying a 34 would be about a net $200 difference or so. Add your $25 and you are ahead. Your experience may be different, but it is something to look at.

A few years ago I put a relatively new G17 upper on an older G22 frame (3-pin). I can't shoot this gun worth a darn, but I shoot my G19 very well. Could it be the locking block is wrong? I see there's a different locking block part number for the G17 vs G22 in Brownells.

So you are saying that for $350 I can purchase a glock 34 slide and slat it on my glock 17 frame???

What does the $350 include???

It works. I bought a 34 and use a 17c slide on it all the time. What I want to find is a 17L slide just for the sake of having it.

The complete upper...

I poked my nose around the links given, but for the life of me I can't seem to find a complete factory 34 upper. After market slides are the only option?

It's easier to buy a complete 34 and find a 17 slide IMO

Has anyone put a 17L barrel on a G17 slide?

Did it function well besides sticking out of the slide?

So if I own a G35 and want to make it to a G22, all I'd have to do is buy a complete G22 upper half?

Yep, and you can turn that into a 31 and a 17. The 31 is just a straight swap, the 17 might need the ejector swapped. The Frames are the same, the standard, the compact and sub compact in the minor calibers (9mm,40,357)
