Target shooting. Responsible target shooting, without needing a quad/snowmobile to get far enough off the fire roads to not draw attention. I know it's permitted (duh) but realistically, where?

Say within an hours drive of Sacramento? Somewhere up the 80 corridor, or out by Foresthill? And in a way that does'nt draw every ranger in twenty miles. Where do the rangers WANT you to go shoot responsibly?

The last thing I need is to have a pissed of Ranger ruin my Saturday. Got better things to do.

Do you just stop by the Ranger station and ask?

I asked a simliar question a while ago on/about BLM and ASSUALT weapons....

But since yours is more general maybe I can help. You could always call the Ranger stations...OR BLM and ask about different districts.

Biggest part/point is- you can basically shott anywhere that it is SAFE and not forbidden. You may NOT use trees as backstops or damage/kill/hurt/etc wildlife and/or the environment.

A DIRT backstop. like an embankment is fine, A LIVE tree is Not. A stump???? I've heard it BOTH ways yea & nay...so I'd ask for yourself. Just be far enough off the "road" too so you're not breaking "that" law. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF-- AND THAT INCLUDES BRASS, reloadable or not, plastic (shotshells) and anything you used as a traget. GLASS IS USUALLY NOT PERMITTED.

No National PARKKKKKKKKKKKS, National Forests OK, NOT PARKS
You Got me on National "Monument" areas...I dunno, DOUBT IT though....
BLM is generally ok---- EXCEPT FOR ASSUALT WEAPONS.... It is SUPPOSED to be ok, but I've heard "them rumors" of people being hassled by BLM about having them anyway (Usaully MUCH further north than Sac Area too).

Last I was up there/that area to shoot ('98???), I was WAY up 80...near Soda Springs....went camping and shooting with about 25 guys as an alterior plan to a bachlor party for a guy that didnt want strippers & Booze (( I know, I know...Thats JUST WRONG!!! But it made everybody happy to go blasting too!))

Good luck.

Spenceville? I'm in Roseville, so pretty familiar with the area...is it north of CFW, or East? BLM land?

CFW is about 20 minutes from the Casa.

the no shooting from feb1 till aug 30 does not apply to the range only to the "wildlife area" so do not cross any fences. it is just outside of camp far west. the easiest way to explain is go i80 to 20 toward penn valley and then take smartville rd to spenceville rd and turn on the first large dirt/ gravel road it is located on a major bend in the road. when in doubt stop at the driftwood bar on 20 and ask where spenceville is.

David, Thanks for the info. I'll check google maps, and see what I can find. Sounds like it's closer to me thru Lincoln. You mentioned a "Range" there? I'll have to go check it out. The Dillman range is close to me, but only open on weekends, and I'd like to be able to have a little more freedom, now and then, than the LRC range allows.
