View Full Version : How annoying is the buffer tube on an Ar pistol?

I was looking into getting a Ar pistol, Para makes an upper that doesn't need a buffer tube. If the barrel was cut down right after the gas block I believe it should function just fine. I really want to know if the buffer tube helps with firing (cheek weld maybe) or if the tube just gets in the way.

Go with a gas piston and you dont need the buffer tube.

Don't you need a buffer tube with the AR design?

It depends on a very short barrel (8" or less) I would say no need for the tube. They are light enough to fire one handed (gas piston w/muzzel brake = kick or .44Mag). On longer barrel AR Pistols you can sorta use it as a stock to mimic Free State SBR. It all boils down to personal preference. However get the gas piston. It really makes a big difference.

I thought this was neat

Um, that's not true for the AR pattern.

I want to fire one of these and see if they are worth it.

This isnt a gas piston AR pattern?

He was probably thinking of a standard gas piston system. Those you still need a buffer tube assembly... the rra version is like a zm/para recoil system combined with a gas piston system.

No, it's not. That uses a proprietary recoil and buffer system like the ZM Weapons rifles. It shares the AR lower and barrel, but the upper and recoil system is not an AR pattern.

My mistake, I learned something new. What makes a rifle a "AR pattern"? The original Stoner design? The lower?

Well, I suppose we're both wrong in some respects.

The AR-15 has a unique DI gas system and in-stock buffer tube recoil operation.

The AR-18 had a type of gas piston operation that is similar to the one that has been adopted by RRA/ZM.

So, technically, an "AR" pattern rifle can have either, but specifying which model, either 15 or 18, will describe the type of recoil operating system.

Most AR-15 gas piston systems retain the 15 style recoil operating buffer tube and are merely drop-in uppers onto the complete AR-15 lower assembly.
