View Full Version : Saiga 5.45 questions

I was thinking of getting either a Saiga in 5.45 or in .223. But I have some questions:

1) I have some spare wood handguards from my Romanian AK. Can I just remove the long Saiga handguards and throw on my Romanian handguards?

I don't have the money or tools to convert it, would just want to remove the ugly handguards the Saiga comes with.

2) Does the Saiga 5.45 take normal AK-74 magazines, or do I have to convert the magazine well? I know you have to do it with the 7.62 version.

3) How much do Saiga mags go for? Are they cheap like normal AK mags, or do they cost a lot more?

4) How much are they going for now? Are they back at $350 or so?

Not the "Normal" RAA Saiga. to put in the Romanian Grips, the front gas chamber needs to be replaced for the upper guard to fit in. For the lower Guard you need a retainer, which again requires the removal of the gas chamber. the butt also can not be fitted without some cutting of the trigger guard. The SGL Saiga now is another question and can be easily fitted with wood stock

1) You need a handguard retainer I believe.
2) Yes, 5.45 doesn't need a bullet guide to fit AK 74 mags
3) The surefire mags seem to be a little ($10-15 more) than standard ak mags.
4) $320-$400 depending on sales/where you look.

1. You need to customize a retainer to use the AK handguard
2. It does take AK74 mags without mod
3. Depends on make and model.
4. $350 is about the current price. Check Peach State Guns (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=267634&highlight=saiga).

$329 at Peach Stae Guns with Calguns discount

Keep in mind that there is no brass case 5.45 ammo available and most of the ranges will not let you shoot steel case ammo.

I use to shoot 7.62x39 steel cased Wolf at my range. So I am assuming if they let steel cased 7.62, they should be ok with 5.45?

Unless they have some VERY strange rules, yes.

Hmm, how do I "steal" core?? :p

Note the cheap 5.45x39 surplus are usually corrosive, so immediate clean after range trip is in order.

Although there are reports where 5.45 SAIGA works with regular AK mag w/o the need for bullet guide, it is still recommended.

I do plan to modify the heck out of the one I got... will post picture when I actually have time to go around doing it.

My local range in Sagus doesn't allow steel core. The range officer usually walks around and inspects your ammo with a magnet.

Anyone know why they don't allow steel core? What is the real reason behind this rule?

they believe it has a greater chance to ricochet back, even though ballistics tests show otherwise

Actually, it's more about the fire hazard. Steel core/jacketed ammo can spark if it hits the right type of rock/debris.
