Yesterday I went out with t0kie to try out my new rifle. It was a beautiful day, perfect for shooting. This was my first time shooting this rifle, shooting 30cal, shooting a rifle of this kind. I have to say that I now have a HUGE appreciation for long range shooting and I am officially addicted. For some reason I get way more satisfaction shooting 10 rounds in 30-45 min than unloading 100rounds in 10min with my AR.

t0kie and I shot 180, 168, and 155 grain bullets and the rifle really liked the 168g Hornady A-Max.

One of the biggest things I learned is take what you read on the internets with a grain of salt, because everything changes when you shoot. Shoot before and after questions and make up your own mind about topics. My biggest challenge was getting accustomed to the recoil. The scope kept hitting my forehead. I purchased an AICS stock that I just got, but the rifle as is shoots way better than me with the SPS Tactical stock. (Disclaimer: I should have saved the money on the AICS for optics and ammo, but I wanted this stock and happened to get it at a good price. It just happens to fit me good too.)

Here was the equipment:
Rem. 700 SPS Varmint 26" barrel
AIM Sports Scope
Houge Stock from SPS Tactical
Shooting bags

Here are the pics:

The Group:
This was group at the end of the day. 10 shots at 100yards. (Be easy on me, I'm a total newb and my first time out!)

OK, it has been proven. He is not THAT Iggy. LOL

Looks like you had fun. Next you will be buying a reloading press so you can feed it for less.

Iggy,
Nice work. You have a good foundation in the Remy. Good shooting for your first time out, too.

Yeah, the recoil will take some getting used to. I'd suggest getting some good hearing protectors to wear over plug to keep the flinch-factor down.
Also, a better scope may provide more eye-relief than what you're using. But it looks like you've got that one dialed in pretty well.

You know there's no cure for this disease, right?

Yeah, not that Iggy!

I dry fire as much as I can and not look like a ninja assassin in my apartment, but it's not the noise its the physical recoil I have trouble managing. If I relax to much the scope goes right into my face. If I anticipate too much or strengthen up I have a hard time keeping steady. More practice I guess.

As far as reloads, I wish I could do my own, but I don't have room in my apartment. A met a fellow calgunner, who will remain nameless due to the fact that I knew he was a calgunner because he was browsing the site in my political science class. He referred me to LoadX which do reloading and do custom loads too, so I may give them a try.

I do want a better scope. I was looking at the SS line due to price now, but I will wait and see.

Try some Federal GMM and you can really see how that performs.

Looks like that "cheap" AIM scope held up. Is that a NC star in disguise?

Looks good to me considering the ammo I see you are using and the glass. I'm not puting your equipment down by any means. I'm just saying for the equipment you have you've done well.

I traded for this rifle so not everything is my first choice, but yeah, so far it works!

What a nice range.

Iggy

It was very well maintained, although it only goes out to 100y for none members, it's really good for now.

By the way ar15barrels do you do work similar to this:

That range needs an infusion of prairie dogs up on that grassy hill...

What's a NC star?
NC Star is a Chinese scope maker. Their products are hit or miss as far as reliability. I think AIM is NCstar?

great job, and i can totally relate to the fun factor of putting fewer rounds down range and having more fun! :D

No Dogs on the grassy hill but lots on the hill opposite the range and on the hillside driving in, especially early in the day.
Alas, too close to the Freeway.:43:

Although come springtime, a few are always dumb enough to hole up in the flat on the right end of the 50/100yd range (pictured).
Not that anyone shoots them.

USI is a nice place(http://www.unitedsportsmen.com/home.htm), but the best part is for Members* which support it....
25-200yd range for rimfire, pistol and rifles, completely enclosed with 20 bays, cement floor, tables, racks, target stands.
They also have five stands for Trap/Skeet. Archery range. Impalements range.

* Diablo Rod/Gun (http://www.diablorodandgun.com/modules.php?name=About), Membership meeting is this Thursday 3/4.

Good shooting, Iggy

Good shooting, Iggy

I used to shoot there a lot until they raised their fees. I remember one time where a shooter at the 100 yard line took a pot shot at ground squirrel or something. He was lucky enough to miss because there was an off duty wild life manager at the range that asked him if he had a hunting license. It was funny because a couple of guys kept on saying if it came close to their target that will be the last mistake it makes. :D

You never know who you are shooting next to....I have seen feds, local police, DOJ, ATF....Never have seen them bother anybody though...

WEAK SAUCE! That gun is a POS, that scope is cheap Jap crap, and the shooter is trying way too hard to be the next Oswald.

Looking forward to a shoot-out once my hotness is pimped up and turned out. I'm looking at the Vipers and Viper PST's (http://www.libertyoptics.com/index1.html) for glass

Here is how she sits now. I slapped on the AICS and the gun feels good. The only thing that I didn't like was how low the scope was sitting so I put some higher rings I had. I can't wait to go out again!

Nice Cheek Weld Pads and Adjustments! Scope height and eye relief looks about right, much better than the previous setup.
