Hi guys,

I'm about to to get a Sig 226. Not sure about the caliber. So, to make it easy, I thought I can get the .40 cal gun, and put on a 9mm barrel to shoot cheaper ammo. I heard a few people have done that. Question - I would like some REAL Concrete info on this, and how well this conversion works.

Plz help asap. Thanks in advance!!!

Yes, it works from .40 to 9mm. I have a Sig 229 chambered in .40. I can use the original mags with the 9mm cartridges. I purchased a Bar-sto semi-drop in precision barrel for the conversion and a little bit of smithing was required for fit.

I'm not sure about the P226 magazines though, but here's the availablity on the barrels themselves. You can contact them directly to see if the original 40/357SIG mags with work with the 9mm.

Just make sure you get a "9mm conversion barrel for the 40/357" and not a regular 9mm barrel since the 9mm slide is a little different.

I did this with my glock 22. Its performed pretty well, had a few failures to eject a couple times, a couple failures to feed. I think it just needed some breaking in.

In the end I kind of wish I had just gone with the 9mm for increased reliability, I don't often shoot the 40 as much. Thats all personal preference though

I have a Storm Lake 9mm drop-in conversion barrel in my Glock 23. It works perfect.

The P226, supposedly, will require different mags. The .40 and .357 SiG can fully interchange mags, and OEM mags are marked for both. 9mm in a 226 requires dedicated 9mm mags.

My Bar-sto conv. barrel has only hiccuped a couple of times with reloads provided by a certain shooting range, but handles handles pretty much everything I've ever put into it without issues with cycling or chambering. Other than the few instances with certain reloads, it's just as accurate as the original barrel. The extra heft of the P229R original chambered in 40 really cuts on the recoil. Girlfriend loves to shoot it that way when she does come out with me.
She's mentioned the original .40 config has to much snap for her.

I think you're right, I think the thickness of the P229 frame is different from .40 to 9mm, whereas the 226 are likely the same thickness.

Edit:

Ok, I found some more solid info on another forum I'm on:

sig 226 either get the barsto semi drop in 9mm barrel for .40/357sig slide or, buy a complete p226 9mm slide from sig or around the internet. I had both at one point but sold the bar-sto and kept the complete 9mm slide.
